Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

Scudo

Been to the USA site mentioned, the 165/40 padlock is missing from the line up.
I emailed them to inquire where in USA to buy them waiting to see what they say.
I thought this was an easy go to my distributor or home depot to grab one up cheap but noooooo.

Thanks

Check your local locksmith shop. Of the 5 I frequent in my area, 3 of them have it in stock.

Then again I'm in Canada so maybe not..

Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

I got a reply today from Abus USA here in Phoenix Az.
They said we can special order one from Germany.
They told me how much and what the shipping would be.
I told them I can gamble buying one on ebay for half that price.

All 3 of my local locksmith supply distributors never heard of the 165/40 not on their lists.
I think I will forget about wanting to play with one of these, the fun has left the building.

Thanks

Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

Victory is mine:

I did finally get one of the Abus 165/40 from an ebay seller in UK.

Fast shipping no problems seller at least with this purchase...http://www.ebay.com/itm/121975693355?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This one is a bit harder to decode than the one in the video seems to be.
Makes for a cool puzzle which is why I wanted one.

Scudo did you ever get that lock opened?

Come on People.

Surely someone can send him one. ?????

Like the original post said - they are not expensive locks.

How many people here received "a little package in the mail" when they were starting out????

Neilau, he got one already.

But I like your attitude. That's what makes the lockpicking community great.

Cheers :)

Nope not yet partly due to time as some of you will know I had a property in Turkey and managed to be one jump ahead (recent coup attempt) and sold it so been tying up loose ends and finally managed to get through all the red tape.

That aside MrWizard send me an address and I will send it to you as you are having more success than me so will be interested to see if you can manage to crack it.

OK, I couldn't resist. Mine landed today. I'm gonna play and see how it goes. First spins under tension have no shortage of false gates :D I reckon this is gonna sit on my desk for awhile, but it'll sure beat doodling while I'm on the speaker phone.

Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

OK, I have mine open multiple times now, but I'm not totally confident of a method. I've had a couple of instances when it just took a lot longer to nail (5 to 10 mins), but I get there in the end since I return the dials back to zero and start again.

I just want to check you guys have the same sequence of false gates on the dials.

Dial 1 (closest the shackle) = on even numbers
Dial 2 = odd numbers
Dial 3 = odd numbers
Dial 4 = even numbers

I'm identifying the false gates by a strong feedback on the shackle.

Anyone got the same on this?

The way it appears to work is you will feel a false gate on even or odd numbers will depend on what the real number is in the combination. I had mine set to easy 1 2 3 4 and it was odd even odd even. So set it back on 0000 and it is even even even even, There that saved you lots of investigative work.

Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

I can confirm Mr Wizard's statement. I got one of these to keep me company on a business trip to Oregon. Didn't get time, and as I was packing, I handed it to a Danish colleague, who had never seen that kind of lock before. He took around 4 minutes to open it. I got him to set a new combination, and tried it on the plane coming back to the UK. I didn't get it, just came to the same kind of conclusion about the false gates. The guy in the Youtube video seemed to be able to feel a difference between real and false gates, but so far this escapes me.

Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

OK. For the record I tried again last night and got it after about 5 minutes. The difference between real and false gates is quite subtle but still exists. It is now just a case of telling my colleague 'Oh yes, it was real easy'.

Re: How to unlock 4-digit combination padlock

I forgot to add once you determine what wheels are false and the real gate is even or odd you have cut the possible numbers in half. 02468 13579. As the gates are always 2 numbers apart.
