SITER; "Jan 1992" - Cruciform tubular Padlock family

Hey Guys,

I ran across these padlocks with their original keys today!

They look to have the same style keyway as the ANKEH lock I posted. These are also quite dense and feel to be of good quality.

They have ball bearings holding the shackle and the 50mm & 60mm versions are key retaining.

I only saw one instance of these mentioned online at LP101 here:http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=58552

These had been sitting on the shelf for years until I rescued them! They are in excellent condition!

Look at the mirror finish on the big mama-- love it!

It is pretty basic to be honest. My original idea was to bastardise an original key but it was just as easy to fabricate the whole thing from scratch.

It works in a similar way to a tubular pick but tension comes from the big chunky tines themselves, pushing against the plug.

The bits above the collar are just 'handles' to make it easier for the user to manipulate the tines.

The screws (all except the one that is there to keep the collar in place) are there to individually tension/lock the tines into place. So when it is picked (or as you are picking it) you can lock them down and they will not move. Unlike most tubular picks too, they will stay firmly locked in place. I find with regular tubular-type picks that even if you lock the collar down 100% sooner or later one of the tines will slip and the pick will stop functioning like a key.

Going from shop to shop digging around old inventory is a lot like treasure hunting!! Sometimes I leave the shop covered in all sorts of dust and dirt, looking like I have been through some kind of lock "Temple of Doom"!

Had to do an update, Marduk's pick is now finished:





I love this making stuff lark, it's very rewarding. Unless Marduk takes your favourite new baby away!

I went to deburr the handle and it was on the deburring wheel a bit too long. But it smoothed out the aluminium and gave it really, really nice 'soft' feeling...so I did all of the handle like it. It makes me just want to bite it whenever I feel it! What I want to know, is this a well known technique? If so, what is it called?

Onto the next project, this should be fun, Abloy Classic!

Brushed, is what it's called. Brushed aluminium. Still want to know more about this. What's the diameter of the shaft? 5mm?
