I purchased a pick set from amazon made by hpc and got my first lock opened in 5 minutes. its just a cheapo china lock that looks like a master lock copy. since yesterday I have picked this thing about 8 times and can get it open within a minute or 2. Im pretty stoked probably gonna buy some more locks tomorrow when i go to the store. Needless to say I'm hooked now.
Re: Woo hoo
That's awesome. I'm new too. Go around and make friends with local locksmiths. Tell them your learning and ask if they have any old locks you can practice on. Buy them lunch and they'll feed you locks. That's what I did.

Re: Woo hoo
Congrats on your first. There are many ways to get practice locks. Locksmiths have been mentioned, also builders, handymen, second hand shops, and one I have to visit soon is a local demolition yard.
Scrap metal yards will also get a visit from me soon hopefully for some car locks, door, boot/trunk, and ignition.
Our local scrap metal yard also has some sliding doors so I might be able to remove the locks and just pay for them.
They only charge $1 per kilo for any scrap metal removed.
Also don't forget to collect old keys as well. I have recently started re-pinning locks to suit other keys. You may be able to gut 2 or more locks to get enough pins of the right length to suit an odd key you have. All of a sudden you have a working deadbolt or lever set with a key to resell.
Sell enough and you can afford that S&G 6741 combo lock to start you on another branch of this fascinating hobby.

We have a locksmith that we use at my job pretty regularly. Ill have to hit him up when I see him again. gonna pick up a couple padlocks today when i go to china mart. may try one of the brinks although it is probably above my capability right now. I didnt become the lead tech at my shop by avioding things above my skill level haha.

Re: Woo hoo
Great work on your master no3. Next is a master 140. I have one that is giving me ulcers at the mo but this is the next step as it has security/mushroom pins and these will take you up to the next skill level.
All that said, enjoy your new skills with your no3.. Well done..
