what you would do is park w1 at your known/suspected gate, dial w2 incrementally, and then dial w3 to your known/suspected gate each time. Martin is right, you'll be helping yourself quite a bit to have an open lock so you can watch how the wheels turn. w3 turns w2, w2 turns w1, so you can't turn 2 without turning 3, and you can't turn 1 without turning both 3 and 2.
So when we say we're parking w3 and doing something else with either or both of the other wheels, we're actually dialing the other two then dialing 3 back to its park position. Parking w1 can be done and left there while the other two wheels are manipulated. Parking w2 could go either way, depending on whether w1 is parked or not... if you're incrementing w1 and parking w2, the you'll have to dial w2 back to it's park position each time you change w1, however if you have w1 also parked, then w2 can be parked and left there while you work only on w3.
make sense?
