Sargent & Greenleaf Rail Road Environmental Padlock Keys

I know, I'm getting picture happy but this photo shows something interesting. Notice the cut progressions?

Based on the picture, I've assigned letters to each cut so we can more easily look for patterns to possibly estimate missing key codes.

A = shallow
B = middle cut
C = deep cut

101: CAB
102: BAC
103:
104: CAC
105: ABA
106: ACA
107: ACB (slim-cut)
108:
109: BCA
110:
111:
112: ABC

Hey CR,
I imagine you are just guestimating the angles of the cuts right? because the 0 is actually more like a -4 or -5. it's not flat across the key when no cut.

um, also CR by following your code legend there, the only key I believe you decoded correctly is the 112.
correct me if I'm wrong but here is what I see the keys as:
101=CAB
102=BAC
104=CAC
105=ABA
106=ACA
107=ACB
109=BCA
112=ABC
am I right?

Do'h - I'm not sure what happened but what I had posted wasn't what was in my final list. I had switched how I was doing the key mid-way (essentially backwards) but I must have forgotten to copy over from my local document. Should be updated now.

A note from looking at the cuts:
No two of the same cuts are right next to eachother.
If we say that this is significant, then that'd mean the key possibilities are:

  Code:

ABA, ABC, ACA, ACB, BAB, BAC, BCA, BCB, CAB, CAC, CBA, CBC

Twelve key combinations.

Nope. They made these keys BEFORE S&G made their own keys. Pretty damned rare lol

I was contacted by the BNSF Railway Police. Yes, They are real. Its illegal to own 105 keys because for some dumb reason, this major railway decided to use only 105 padlocks. So one 105 key, can potentially be used to derail a train at any juncture on the railway.
This is also true for 102 keys. Another major railway uses only 102 keyed padlocks. Its nice to know that any dangerous cargo and our lives are protected by only two keys.

Where do you pick up those locks? I've seen on ebay for around $50 a piece which seems steep for a collection lock but they look cool and I want one!

thats where my collection started. A padlock with key in good condition sells from $75-$150 depending on the rarity of the key.

Considering then that the 102 key is supposedly illegal to own that explains the price here.
