Re: Materials Sources

So what are you going to use to grind them - Dremel tool or a bench grinder?

If you get a Dremel, get a cordless one. I have one with a cord, and it tends to get in the way sometimes.

I broke down and bought a bench grinder at Lowes for $89 bucks. It's kind of overkill - but ya never know when you may need to sharpen....your axe... or the blades on your Freddy Kreuger gloves...

Re: Materials Sources

Don't forget ....files...lots of files...flat, round, triangular.

Here's a good macjine shop supply place (i.e files, tools, material - ck out the feeler gauge material stock):http://www.msdiscount.com/index.aspx?session_id=665114358

MicroMark has a lot of model supplu stuff, but their files and dremel bits/cutter selection is pretty good: http://micromark.com/

Re: Materials Sources

dont forget about safety ;)

but i have an expensive dremel that i dont like to use for making picks and then i have a cheap knock-off one that i like to use... i like bench grinders for the speed but i prefer a dremel over it... and then i prefer hand files over that... you just have to remember not to force the tools... let the speed of the wheel do the work... and remember not to let the metal get too hot... thats why i prefer the hand files... you keep the metal's temper... :)

Re: Materials Sources

I like Otto Frei for files.

They are a jewelry tool supplier. So they also have things like Foredom flex shafts, which kick Dremel's ass.

I have been using spring steel from smallparts.com for my picks, but I am going to try the feeler gauge stock from McMaster-Carr next time.
