So i just read the whole write up and it's wonderful! Great job Oldfast, I learned so much! I really need to get my hands on some American locks now Do you know where I can find any that were made before master lock had bought them out? I want to pick one with the serrated key pins and the security driver pins so I don't want to get one and find out it only has standard internals.

The major difference to spot is the keyway and keybows.

Most of them you'll see going on ebay will still be the old originals.

If you'd like, I'll send you a couple. If you want em', you'll have to be patient though.
They're keyed alike, and have no keys. I'll clean em' up, mix up the pins a bit, and cut
some keys for them. But I have no blanks right now... so it might be some time.

Well, I thought it'd be a bit too. But rather than ordering & waiting to receive blanks...
I was able to use a brass one that I had only started to cut. I really don't like to use the
nickel-plated blanks for these locks (just doesn't look right). But I had one of them left.

Thought you'd rather enjoy these sooner rather than later

you thought right I don't mind nickel-plated though, it's nice to have two different looking keys

I have to say thanks for this thread.

I got myself a 5300 and although I picked it once I couldn't open it again However after going through this I managed several openings last night (though with widely varied time taken)

Unfortunately I now want a couple more American padlocks which is unfortunate as they cost stupid money over here (about $50 for a 5300 for example)
