Waht I heard is that the police ignored an alarm. Their policy is that after 3 false alarms they ignore them...
How reassuring...
And since then I read that they also consider insider info. (Alarm was deactivated and supposedly they used mutliple independent alarm systems to double-secure things, as is standard in such places.)
It looks like a really mazing robbery, something out of a film.
I hope when they find out what happened tehy makea cool ralsitic film of it :D

:D Don't yer just love a nice hole when you see one (...... said the bishop to the barmaid)

Images of the hole drilled by thieves into the vault at a Hatton Garden safe deposit company have been released.

A work of art.

Just looked at the pics, and wow. "Mama always said if you are going to do something, do it right". And they did it right. :D

Thanks for the link, MrAnybody.

Wow. That's a lot neater than I expected. No sign of any reinforcing that I can see. Wonder if they knew that?

I told that 2 meters wall is impossible :D
500 mm it is maximal deep for DD350
Since I can see on the photos it is old vault. So I suppose alarm system was old too. :D

Philosophy for UK police: If an alarm activates at a safe deposit company does it make a sound?

Maybe better; If an alarm activates and the cops are aware, is there a response?

Very good!

Just been on the news. They didn't drill through 7 feet of concrete, it was half a metre. Just under 19 3/4''. Here's another link:

Edit: TV over here has an irritating habit of converting all measurements to metric. The newspaper article says the wall was 20 inches thick. This makes more sense as this vault was built at a time when imperial measurements would've been used.

Why does that wall not have tons of rebar in it? I know banks have walls and floors interlaced with rebar to prevent this kind of attack. Now that I see the pics, I guess any saw cutting/boring company could have helped pull this heist off.

kerti called it right at the start.

Yeah, I reckon Hatton Garden Safe Deposit are now gonna be out of business.

The Hilti people must have mixed emotions. Somewhat embarrassed that one of their drills was used, but pleased by how well it performed, I bet.

The wall almost certainly did contain rebar, however it is not easily visible in these situations.

Here is another picture of a core drilled vault. There is no
rebar clearly visible, but as detailed in the thread by the technician responsible, there was rebar & there is a picture of a fragment of it that temporarily jammed the drill : http://www.antique-locks.com/showthread.php/3454-core-drilled-a-vault

It is a beautiful door, however it is not particularly heavy duty & dates back to the 1940s - safe technicians on other sites have stated that they're surprised that the 1940s era door hadn't been replaced with something superior (and if modern, likely quite plain to look at).

But the density is not correct. I've worked in old banks, and when they removed portions of the wall or floor it would contain a nest of rebar. You would burn up any bit trying to drill through these walls.

You can see in that saw cut that wall had standard amounts of rebar, real bank walls are formed to not allow a core drilling machine to puncture them like that.

The Hilti DD 350 does have a button they call Iron Boost. It's sorta like a supercharger setting for cutting through rebar.

How well this would work on a 'real' bank wall, I don't know.
