New guy here, I work surrounded by 100's and 100's of keys.

Hello,

Recently got into locking picking, which I believe inevitably stemmed from my love of keys as a child.
I now work in a key room at a prison, go figure, and am surrounded by locks, keys all day long.

While I'm sure they wouldn't be enthused with me try to pick all the random locks around, it is what I do now to pass the time.

Hope to learn more from you all.

Mainly Folger Adams, a lot of Mul-T, Medeco, Sargent, and RR Brinks type stuff as well.

I could talk to building management one of these days and see what he thinks on it.
By rare, what kind of prices should I be willing to pay for these suckers.
The Adam's Mogul, and Cell locks are huge... The keys for the cells are nearly 3/4 of my hand long.

The prices go up and down and depend on condition and if they have working keys or not.

The Moguls with keys are pretty rare but usually sell for less than the "lever" locks but since they usually sell on ebay things can go really weird. I have seem some stuff go for under half of what we were thinking it was worth so the market fluctuates wildly.

And in case anybody was wondering what the "lever locks" are like just watch this. This is just one variation and the top plate is 1/2 thick IIRC. ;)

Most all the locks on the shelves here have 3 or 4 working keys.
Unfortunately, most the lever locks are still attached to whole cell doors.
I don't think I can even lift one, and am glad it isn't my job to replace faulty ones! :P

Welcome to the forum Lockster. You will find loads of information here. Be sure to join us on the chat.

I am not saying that you should not ask the building maintenance about these locks, but you should be aware that sometimes people act 'weird' when you question locks (especially in high security areas). Locksmiths are sometimes the same way, some might think you are genuinely interested, others might think you might be trying to take customers by learning the trade and opening you own business. Either way, past experience has shown that people don't understand our interest in locks, be it picking or just understanding how they work. I would think a prison might be one of those weird situations.

Anyhow, welcome!

A big welcome to you lockster.... I'm Mike.

I'm glad you're here and I'm eager to hear more about what you do there
and the things you see!! I have a Folger Adam and an RR Brinks Mogul...
neither were all too cheap to get my hands on. But as Riy mentioned,
things can get a little wierd when it comes to ebay. lol

I also had the pleasure of playing with one that Kokomolock was kind
enough to send around the forum. Lots of fail and success vids resulted!

Had to make a giant pick for the beast. haha

Hey there,

Thank you for the warm welcome!
That RR Brinks a very common lock around here. And I must agree the keys for these guys are huge.
I haven't really moved on yet from simple locks, myself.
Hopefully someday soon, I'll be up to those guys.

A very valid point.
I'm sure in some way if they wanted to off me, they could get me not only fired, but with a Class I Felony for even having them on my person.
Though, I technically am not in the 'prison' but a 'safe' area, where guns, etc are even allowed, I do have the ability to hand out keys, via a slot which I'm sure they could take as the possibility of picks going through as well. That said, I've been in the same place for years, and no one has been found with any picks :P

I've also never thought to go strike up a conversation with the local locksmith.
The guy has been in the same place before the city he is in was even incorporated.
Nice, yet quirky old fellow. Wonder how he'd take to me trying to learn a thing or two from him.

So far from what I've seen the older the locksmith the less likely you will get cooperation. The older ones hate the internet because they can't stop the flow of information which they think they own all rights to. They don't like anyone knowing what they know and quite often don't even like sharing knowledge with other locksmiths. They see anyone within a 100 mile radius with lock knowledge as a threat to their livelyhood regardless of what you are going to do with that knowledge.
