New to locks and here.

Hi All, let me say hello. I registered here after seeing a write up on the Mosler 302 combo lock by Oldfast. I recently bought a real safe that I am converting into a slightly fire resistant gun safe. Details, the safe is a Molser GSA security container class 5 from the late 70s. It has no fire protection, 3/8" steel walls and door, Mosler group 1R 302 change key lock and very robust bolt system.

There are a few mods that I would like to make to the locking system. I will be running these by you guys and I hope you don't beat me up too much. To give you some idea of my capabilities, I made a change key for this lock out of a screwdriver after looking at pictures online. I have changed the combo a couple of times (always test, test, test while open). Anyway, I plan on putting forth proposed changes and ask you what you think. Please don't respond with "that's a dumb idea" without giving me an idea why you think so. Some of the ideas should be entertaining.

To get it started, how heat resistant are the plastic wheels in the 302 1R lock? I am planning on replacing the wheels with a set of change key brass wheels (group 2). The goal is a working lock after a mild fire (not enough to lose the dial). I have also considered pinning the internal, dual action relocker (heat and punchout).

Let the games begin, DIY.

BTW, how do I post pics?

Welcome diy! First thing to know, these folks are incredibly helpful, there are no dumb questions. This site is the gold standard for member support! If your container is 3/8" thick it must be a real brute, do you know it's original purpose? Lastly, I have melted the thermal relocker on many GSA Moslers. Never has it bothered the wheelpack. That is not the kind of heat a fire will produce, but it is cherry red hardplate by the wheels! Pinning the relocker will lessen the security of the container ( it matters if you're insuring the contents ). My name is Mark, again welcome and we look forward to your project.

Re: New to locks and here.

jharveee, Thank you for the picture posting link.

Hi Mark, the container was originally for documents and owned by Boeing. By pinning the relocker, I mean the pin in the cover that releases the relocker if the lock is punched or heated. Pinning would defeat the heat related relock but not the punching. The current wheels are plastic to defeat x-ray and I don't have any idea at what temp they would melt. Depends on the type of plastic. Of course if they melted completely then the lock should open except for the thermo relocker. I will restart this thread in a more appropriate category.

Thank you, DIY.

If I am not mistaken the wheels should be made from delrin (melt point around 175C / 347F)

Also welcome to the forum :)
