HPC Blue Handle Hook. (Not review, just a couple pics)

EDIT: Apparently some people are misunderstanding, or just not reading. These hooks are MODIFIED! The part number from H.L. Flake CLPX-12H "HPC Blue Handled Hook" with no picture, is a POSTAL style hook.
The pictures below are after I trimmed them, so these are NOT the blue handled short hooks you can buy
.

So I ordered two of the blue handled HPC picks from H.L. Flake, the individual ones.

Be aware....these picks are not short hooks, there is no picture on the website, I just assumed (stupidly) that they were standard hooks...since it said "hook". Anywho, they are more like the Peterson Postal picks.

This isn't a terribly bad thing actually, I trimmed mine down with wire clippers, then smoothed the cut with a fine file.
I didn't take pictures before I cut them, but if you have seen a postal pick, use your imagination and apply that profile to these pictures and you will have what I originally bought. For a little over $1.50 each it's really not that bad, it actually let me trim the hook to different heights for my own personal preference.

I do like the thin profile shaft it has compared to the usual tapered shaft that most hooks have, allows for better use with deep cuts.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the width of the business end of the pick is almost exactly .020"

Re: HPC Blue Handle Hook. (Not review, just a couple pics)

I would say they are, just to check I shoved them in the three Euro locks you sent me. You may have to trim them pretty low since you can't really twist them up between the wardings, or you can jiggle them to the back of the locks on the real crazy key ways. Anyway, I made them work in the locks you sent, I'm sure there are locks over there that don't have quite the crazy key ways either. For less than $2 per pick, you can't really go wrong considering you can trim them to all different heights that you want. By the way, your pinning mat showed up today, gonna try to get it out to you tomorrow. Are you interested in some of those blue handled picks Pete?

Hey Chris,

I picked up some of these from Flake as well. However, mine will not be here until tomorrow.

I found this document very useful in getting an idea of what the picks looked like and some information about them.

Hope this helps someone.

What part numbers did you get, Chris?
femurat: They're called restricted for a reason...
Innerpicked: The more keys you carry, the more important you look
GWiens2001: Great video! Learned a lot about what fun can be had with a forklift and a chainsaw.
pmaxey83: but i first have to submit the proper forms for a new hobby to my wife

Re: HPC Blue Handle Hook. (Not review, just a couple pics)

Yeah they only sell to "bonafide security professionals". Ar you wanting the postal style like I had and trimmed down, or the actual short hook? I don't know what the part number is for the actual short hook, and I checked over the website and couldn't find an individual blue handled short hook.

Re: HPC Blue Handle Hook. (Not review, just a couple pics)

I've got a few hpc picks without the handles and they are great quality but difficult to hold...The ones with the handles really interest me but as dopug mentioned we cant get them over here in the UK

CLPX-12H

This is confusing because the postal pick is labelled CPX-31H in the HPC literature:

Image

Do you think the bin in the HL Flake warehouse with postal picks is mislabelled CLPX-12H?

Re: HPC Blue Handle Hook. (Not review, just a couple pics)

Great picture Piotr...I guess it is possible it is mislabeled. Just to be sure it wasn't a fuck up on my end I just looked at my invoice. "10CLPX-12H" "HPC Picks-Hooks w/ Blue Handle (.022)" is exactly what is listed on my invoice.

I know this may sound silly to you coming from a "seasoned pro", but the CLPX-31H is what I've always known as a "deep hook". Is this what you're calling "postal"?

Re: HPC Blue Handle Hook. (Not review, just a couple pics)

Yeah, I just used the term that Peterson uses for it's "deep hook".
