Thanks a lot, Solomon! Will Photobucket eventually drop them again? If so, have you considered going with a different host? imgur.com is pretty good.

Goodness me thank you for this, I was considering ordering a disc detainer lock a cheap simple one) to improve my skillset but I didn't know how they worked. Now I'm only slightly afraid of the lock eating me alive. The pictures were very nice I got my Ohhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhh! after the sidebar was introduced and the youtube animation was the perfect slice of cheesecake.

Wonderful write-up Solomon!

By starting with a brief overview, I was able to get a general idea of what would be covered (this really helps, as opposed to just diving into details). Then you built upon that in a very logical sequence. And your writing/pictures were great- simplistic and understandable... just the way I like it (and need it) lol.

This certainly took some time. Your efforts are GREATLY appreciated. Excellent contribution... excellent.

If I may, here's a couple vids I've come across by Schuyler Towne that may also be helpful..

thanks for the write-up. the problem i found was with my tool grabbing the first two discs instead of just tensioning the first. after some investigation, i've got the feel for proper tension and can feel the sidebar click in very obviously. i've only opened a few, but many times, and the tool i'm using isn't the most well crafted, but with some sanding and reshaping i've made it come through for myself. the disc detainer locks are becoming popular and more available, i've gotta be up on that stuff. thanks again.

Very informative Solomon.

I just acquired some Abloy disc locks and am enjoying finding out about these unusual locks.

Just a quick question. Why are Abloy disc locks so different?

Any post on disc locks seem to single Abloy out as locks that are too difficult to pick.

Mine look very similar to others from what I can see inside.

I have included some pics of my Abloy disc locks.

Once again thanks for the education.

It is a known fact that older models like the Abloy Classic have been picked.

What separates Abloy from the (mostly) Chinese locks is tolerances. Abloy tolerances are a lot higher than others and usually have more cuts/depths available. The cheap ones might only have 3 different cuts and gates in the discs that are very wide.

Newer Abloy models have a thing called the Disc Control bars that are supposed to prevent the manipulation of 1 disc at a time.
