Re: Judd's Picks
Excellent work, Judd. Keep it up.
Re: Judd's Picks
Gnarly picks man
And look at all those rakes... some of those bogota variations are really creative. I see at least 3 I gotta try for myself if for no other reason than they look sweet.
You are still working on the hooks, right? Reducing their size as you continue to test them. Otherwise they are too large. In fact alot of your tools have shafts that are too thick. Some jerk had to say it
Also, on the bogota, while the sweep of the shaft is pleasing to the eye, it limits the movement of the tool in the lock and concentrates stress underneath that first peak. Straight shaft is more durable, manueverable, etc... I only mention these things because I've made similar picks. You have left yourself enough material in the right spots to make them better still, except for the snake. It looks good. Nice finish on the tip too.
I grind mine slightly too large, then sand them smooth and try them out for a bit. After I pick around for awhile I decide if it is catching and where it can afford to be thinner. I usually visit the grinder 1 more time, at least, sand smooth and more picking. Similar to sharpening a knife, the worst thing you can do cosmetically and functionally is rush the process.
Cool stuff man.

Re: Judd's Picks
Seems all of a sudden everyone is using oak for the handles. Its a great idea where are you guys buying it though?
Re: Judd's Picks
very nice work Judd some pretty cool euro wave jiggler/bogata rakes there
Am I correct in saying BS stands for band saw blades
the reason I mention it is I have a book from the 90's called by a guy called eddie the wire & that is what he advocates using to make picks
catch ya lata have fun........................

Re: Judd's Picks
just thought of something else you may use dipsticks not the people kind
out of engines kind although the width factor may be a problem but the kind out of wagons trucks etc the steel is high quality due to oil temp etc
I made a euro wave jiggler/bogata rake out of one and it is very strong
