Simple $1 pinning mat

I made this pinning mat from a 150mm x 115mm (6" x 4.5") piece of self-adhesive felt that was intended to be stuck to furniture legs to protect the floor. I used a craft knife to cut holes for the compartments, and then stuck the felt onto a piece of plywood that I had cut to size and sanded. It only took a couple of hours to make, and cost $1 for the felt (the plywood was scrap).

The pin cutouts are 15mm x 5mm (0.6" x 0.2") and the larger compartments are 30mm x 30mm (1.2" x 1.2") and 50mm x 30mm (2" x 1.2"). The spaces between compartments are 10mm (0.4").

Here it is with the innards of an Abus 72/40.

Nice, creative idea. L)

Personally, I'd avoid felt to avoid getting hairs in the lock on reassembly. But it looks great!

Although I haven't searched anywhere, I imagine you can get self adhesive rubber sheets that would also work.

That was my original plan, but my local hardware supplier didn't have any.

Ah, ok. Maybe craft supply stores would have some. Or custom rubber stamp suppliers (the raw material that they laser-engrave to make rubber stamps).
