So were they spooled master pins? I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Were they different from the usual master pins that would be found in a BEST SFIC core?

yep, they were master pins, and they werent' the usual master pins, they were just really thin spools, and they didn't even do much good as far as security goes, I don't mess with I cores much, they don't interest me much other than just picking.

Im a beginner and new to this and was wondering if somebody could please tell me how you know what type of pins are inside the lock without opening it up? Wouldn't knowing what's inside make a difference on how you pick it? Thanks! -Kraig

security pins ( ie spool, mushroom ,serrated) cause a false set
this is when the plug rotates to about 1:00 then stops.
THIS

explains spools and false set:

after a while you start to know by feel and experience.
the more you pick ,the more you learn.

When you slide a serrated pin across the sheerline - you'll feel a little resistance as the pin glides across.

With a spool pin, you can feel a slight DROP once you slide past the tip - and then more HARSH resistance as you try to get UP and OVER the other end of the spool.

Mushroom pins give you a similar DROP as the spool - but a smoother resistance as you glide across the ramped skirt of the pin.

And yes, you're right - knowing what type of pins are in a lock certainly helps in your plan of attack. That's why it's important to get your hands on as many varied locks as possible, practice and train your hands - and mind to learn to interpret what you are feeling. Close your eyes and visualize the pick and see in your mind's eye what you are doing by "feel".

I would say that picking is about 40% manual dexterity combined with skill, and 60% spatial visualization.

It's all a head game.

try jumbling the drivers for a different challenge....you would be amazed just how much this affects the lock's "personality".

i could not agree with you more on that... i had a 6 pin lock and 1,3,5 were serated and 2,4,6 were spool and i switched them and omg it was a whole new lock lol, and they were all about the same cut really low cuts, fun fun pick
