Kroeplin Micrometer

I received my gorgeous Kroeplin Micrometer this morning for my impressioning kit.

Very sweet little device. Apart from the micrometer and a slip of paper certifying its calibration, there are 2 pieces of steel. One with the numbers 3 and 5 on it and the other blank. There's nothing else in the box. I can tell you that the larger piece is 2 mm thick and the smaller is 1.5 mm thick, but I've no idea how these are useful to me.

What are these two pieces for?

Many thanks.

Re: Kroeplin Micrometer

Those look like wrenches for adjusting the tips...calibration perhaps?

Nice Mr A, very nice. I'd like some outside edge calipers like this. This particular one looks a little out of my price range though!

Re: Kroeplin Micrometer

That is professional stuff there :) How much was it and where did you get it from?
Is it made of plastic though?

The one I have is this:

it's harder to use, but it will probably survive me and maintain good functionality. I love old engineering :) They made stuff for eternity.

Thanks, Jeff. Nice one.

I've just found that the smaller wrench on the larger piece fits around the top of the tip. Cool. Blindingly obvious, now you've pointed it out lol.

Not sure if the others are any use to me though.

Cool. Job done.

Re: Kroeplin Micrometer

Ar-ha! Now I've really got it. I need to use both wrenches at the same time to adjust each Anvil. One at the top, one at the bottom, twist in opposite directions to loosen/tighten.

Well, well. Every day is a school day.

I don't treat myself to one too often, but nothin' gets me excited like a new tool! Congrats!

Being spring loaded like that, I'll bet taking readings will be easy & quick.
And, the spring force should make for great consistency I would think.

As far as plastics. That shit has come a loooong ways. In fact some of them
I dunno if you can technically even call plastic, lol. Some of the mixtures
nowadays are crazy durable and long lasting, yet light weight.

Re: Kroeplin Micrometer

Yep, I know what you mean. A delicious little thing. It could not be quicker to take readings with it. I might do a few screen protectors with the depths of particular pins drawn on them. I can't bring myself to draw on the face directly though. No, no, no.

And you're totally right about the construction. Totally solid. And really nice and light. I could not be happier. If you can get it cheap, I highly recommend it.

Re: Kroeplin Micrometer

Congratulations on the new tool purchase! I hope it serves you well. As for me, I currently have this on my shopping list:

http://www.insize.ir/products/tools/bore%20gage,%20thickness%20gage/21%20depth%20gauge.php

I need this to measure dimple keys accurately. Right now I use an empty plug and a measured key pin to do it. Hopefully the local price isn't too bad.

What's with all these fancy measuring tools? Whatever happened to just "eyeballing" it?

UK Bumpkeys are out. A quick look at other sources shows prices from $100 - $200. Dev Ollam sells a similar gauge for $20.

I don't understand how the mark-up could be so large. I assume that at 10 GBP ukbumpkeys are making a profit so how can other suppliers justify selling the same product at 100 GBP?

Re: Kroeplin Micrometer

How they did it in the old days.

This tool would be getting on to nearly 100 years old.

My father was a jewler and gave me this many, many years ago. You will notice the screw near the dial so that you can lock it in place. I never had a use for it till I took up this hobby.

There is no brand on it. The scale is in 1/10 mm. Probably German.

I don't want to polish it up (other than the scale) as I like the patina of age.

For all you lovers of old tools - enjoy.

Cheers.
