Impressioned my first lock

So I am quite excited I was recently reading about impressioning and decided to give it a go!
the lock is a cheap 5pin taymor (kw1 key) unfortunately I am fresh out of kw1 key blanks so I used an ar1
it took me aboout 20 minutes
I used a black marker and at times found it very hard to see the marks because just pushing the key in scraped off a lot of marker so I started putting just a little turning pressure on the key well inserting it and this put a line down one side of the key and I could see the pin marks clearly on the other side.

I used an oval file from a cheap set of needle files made in china that I found in my toolkit no idea where they came from.

Thanks for the great resource this forum has been.

See those kids standing by the lake...drop some napalm and watch them bake.

Not as bad as "genital feedback" instead of "gentle feedback" (in the Storm pick thread) Well done!

Re: Impressioned my first lock

somehow I expected it to be more difficult
& the key I made works smoother than the key that came with the lock from the factory

Re: Impressioned my first lock

Well done! Takes me back to my first impressioned key. It was a lesson in my correspondance course (Locksmithing Institute). Impressioned a key to a Master #1 padlock. Held the key with a 3" C-Clamp and made the cuts with a rattail file. Wasted two blanks and got it on the third.

Re: Impressioned my first lock

Thanks guys! I look forward to trying some more!
I have an old wafer lock that I do not have a key for that I would like to try with the knife blade technique but I dont have any blanks for it. I will try and post a picture of the keyway latter and maybe someone can sugest a blank for me.
Im not sure what the lock is from and it has no identifying marks on it but I think it must be either from an elevator or an atm cash drawer. as I remember seeing lots of these locks around the house when I was young and my dad repaired both in the 80's and apparently at least one of them survived in my garage, it reminds me of the locks that were on the hard plastic floppy disc cases just a little longer.
