I just got a dremel for my birthday and I want to know how to make bump keys with it. I am new with a Dremel. Should I use a template, I know nothing about bump keys. Thanks in advance.

Not to bring back a dead thread, but, when it comes to making bump keys, i personally feel i have more control with a dremel than with files. For me, i use a 1/8" tungsten carbide tip and at each cut point on a currently cut key, slowly and evenly cut each bit to the lowest possible level, making sure that both the peaks and valleys are level across the key, so all the tips are the same height and the valleys are the same depth. The 1/8" bit seems to be the perfect width to cut. With that, ive been able to make a master m1, schlage sc1, and kwikset kw1 bump key that all work quite well.
here is a pic of the keys ive made.

I like to mark out my pin spacing, then use the dremel to cut tiny notches to help keep the file where it needs to be, I always F up my bump keys when I don't use the 'Cheater" notch method. Helps me get the initial spacing down, also it helps when starting with the file to not make miss strokes.
