Any model shop should have piano wire in many diameters, particularly hobby shops that deal with model aeroplanes as piano wire is used for the ailerons etc.

Cheers AULockpicker. I just watched your Youtube videos as well. Nice work :) Where in Australia are you from if you dont mind me asking.

Now this question is free for all. If i were to make a DIY by pass tool out of piano wire what would it look like? I think a rough guide to go off would be good so i dont go wasting piano wire and what not.

Cheers

Essentially, an 'L' shape, but not at a full 90 degrees. Sometimes they have a slight curve to them.

So i caved and went and bought a by pass driver tool. Hopefully this works :) Cheers for all the suggestions guys. As for the piano wire it seems that for some reason its hard to come by in my locality. And if all else fails then im taking a dremel to this darn things and ill attempt to possibly make my first cutaway. If anyone has any tips or tricks in that department then just PM me or reply to this post and those that follow.

Cheers

I've just picked mine and relocked it without the plug inserted so I could see what was going on. The Southord 15 piece dimple set has what I believe is a bypass tool not too dissimilar to the American so I thought I'd try it. Although it fits through the keyway and reaches the cam business it is nowhere near strong enough to rotate that cam thingo, that spring is too much for it and I didn't want to risk twisting the tool. As it was it twisted just enough so as to not allow me to retract it, I had to twist it back a tad with pliers to get it back out of the plug, and if it turns while protruding and can't be returned to original position the pins prevent it from being retracted, I've been caught before with that. If something could be constructed out of much stronger metal I reckon it would work, good luck engineering one though <g>. Can't do it with tensioner inserted through the keyway cos the the plug design won't allow rotation beyond quarter of a turn, if it rotated half a turn you'd probly be home and hosed. I've a feeling you'll have to wake the Dremel up <g>. At least you could probly replace the shackle and still have a working lock.

How to bypass padlock with missing cam actuator

OK, Mur670.  Here is how I opened my padlock which I had, like you, forgotten to reinstall the cam actuator before locking it. :axeem:

First, get a working copy of your key, then cut it off at the highest warding.

Image

Put the half of the key into the lock and turn the keyway a little bit.

Image

Insert a long piece of wiper blade or tension wrench handle long enough to reach all the way through the plug and stop fully against the cam.  You might want to test the length needed by inserting the tension wrench handle with no key in the plug, as some locks (like mine) use a screw cap to hold the plug in the KIK, which can make it harder to fully insert your tool in the hol... Uhh, fgarci07 may be reading this, better rephrase that. :-P. to get the wrench to reach the cam.

Image

Turn the key so that the tension wrench catches the cam, and opens the lock!

Good luck,

Gordon

Great beard of Zeus!!!

Gordon that is some operation you've got going on there. Given the right tools i could do this but presently im unable to undertake such an endeavour. Kudos to you though. Definitely another option to add to the list if the By Pass Driver i ordered doesn't work.

Cheers,

Oisin.

It is you who finds the water being nice in the gutter, not me! :fu:

Anyway, big operation you got there! Gordon, that is just amazing!
If I went to a locksmith here in Portugal with that issue, he would say: "Yeah, nothing to do to this.. I can, however, sell you a good one for a fair price!"

Would it be too much to say that Gordons post should be made a sticky?

Of course the water is nice! :agree: But it can get crowded. I like room to swim!

That is exactly what I was told. But you know me... Tell me something can't be done, and I will keep thinking and trying until it is done.

Don't tease me.. Next time I will do that and you'll be sorry! :whip:

...

Ok here it is:
Pick an EVVA MCS with JUST a hook and a tension wrench! And don't discuss semantics with me. I said pick it! Don't poke with it untill you break something

And yes, I do agree to make Gordon's post a sticky. Although it has never happened to me, I believe it's a fairly common mistake to make, with no "obvious" solution. This would help a lot!

 Don't even have an EVVA MCS to pick. But if I get one, I will give it a shot. Hmmm. If I use the proper steel for a hook, should be able to magnetize it.

Of course you did not say that I need to successfully pick OPEN the lock, did you? :armed:
