My first cutaway

This is my first real attempt at making one of these. I started to do one right when I first got into locks but just wrecked it and gave up.Now that I kind of know what I'm doing I tried it again.

I've learned a few things at least. Like doing it completely freehand was a bad idea, I should have at least drawn some lines first. I have some ideas on what to do differently on my next attempt, but I'd still love to hear any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks man. Let me get a little better at this before I go passing them around though.

Very nice Aedales, Aedalas

Thank you! I do too, I used a Dremel and a mini hacksaw for a lot of the work but I do love the control you get from files.

Beautiful!! Just beautiful. I've got to try my hand at this one of these days.
No time like the present! I'd be real interested in seeing what you do as you strike me as a bit of a perfectionist. No offense meant by that, it's a good thing imo.

I haven't done much with it besides this, but right now I'd say brass is a great material to work with like this. It's soft enough that it doesn't take hours to grind down a lot of material yet still hard enough that you don't have to be super careful about going too fast. The heat dissapates nice and quick too. Looking forward to it, more metal to play with is always a good thing, thanks again man!

When I first tried it out I had just filed down the rough edges on the inside so there would be no gouging or anything and it was pretty rough. Rather than hit it with the graphite I took it all back apart and sanded it all (inside) with 1000 grit paper then polished it as well so it was VERY smooth. The pin chambers are a motherbitch to sand btw... After polishing it all up inside it works great, no roughness or grittyness at all.

None taken...lol. But yeah, can be good... can be bad. For the most part I feel I've learned to make it a good thing (but not always).

If this is the results from your very first attempt, I can't wait to see the next few! They'll be brilliant I'm sure.

I'd like to do a good few by hand eventually. Also, SOMEDAY I'd absolutely looooove to have a mini-mill.

Thank you all so much. As I made this for myself your kind words are the only real payment for all the work I did, and it's truly appreciated. The sense of accomplishment means more when I've seen the quality work you guys have done, it's nice when my wife says it looks good, but you guys are some amazing craftsmen and know what you're talking about. Besides, she kind of has to say that. So again, thank you all.

Also, damn this is addicting... I'm sitting here eyeballing my last KIK good enough to make one out of. I really need to buy some more.
