i have studied several different authors versions of the story,
and wow! VERY clever...the fact that they were probably getting scammed by the crooked merchants' insurance ploy is ironically
poetic.

I thought it was common knowledge that when he drove to Italy he took the rest of the missing loot with him to his family to hide it, and he left the clues behind on purpose so he would go to jail, nobody on earth plans a 100+ million dollar heist and pulls it off with such exquisite detail then forgets to burn the proof in an empty forest.

He will be enjoying his 100 million dollar life when he's out of jail.

He had to go to jail there is no way he could continue to stay in antwerp after doing this kind of heist and anyone that would have stopped working in that building would be interrogated. That, and the diamond industry has protocol to use lie detectors on everybody, so once the lie detector tests went down they would know he's guilty. They didn't over look anything, this is all part of their brilliant plan.
