Issues with with masterlock 01

Ok so I found these locks locked together and decided I'd use the master lock as a starting place seeing how you can pretty much breathe at them according to everyone and they open... Well mine must be an exception because I can't rake this or spp it "I'm not great at spp yet need practice" but I mean hell I should be able to rake it right? Also I've oiled it and done basically every technique I can find on YouTube and nothing :( any ideas?

Ease off the tension. Most beginners use far too much tension.

Not always. Often times, yes. But not always. Definitely don't beat yourself up over it.

BOK? Make sure your tension wrench is not binding on the bottom.
TOK? Be sure your tensioner isn't touching the first pin, or, not allowing
you to lift it high enough. I can see from your photo the 1st pin is quite
shallow and will need to be lifted a good ways.

Sometimes I prefer somewhat heavy tension with those. It can make for
some very illustrated, crisp sets. You can really hear and feel each pin
when you've set it correctly this way.

Also, nearly all laminated Masters will open when turned in either direction.
Try picking it counter-clockwise. You may find it falls right open for you.
This changes the binding order and can sometimes make it much easier.

Re: Issues with with masterlock 01

I've found that if I am having trouble with this model (or the no.3's & no.5's) that I have usually over set another pin inadvertently. Letting off tension to drop one pin or a light rake with my hook and light tension often fixes it so I can move on to the next binder.
... or I haven't fully set a pin ( this seems to happen more in the ones that aren't very audible when they set or I'm using too heavy tension).

Re: Issues with with masterlock 01

My advice to you is to forget that raking even exists and practice SPP. Move on to another lock and come back to it later. You'll open it eventually.

:agree: Good advice here.
Also that looks like an older crapy lock. It would be much easier to learn if you went out and bought a brand new master. Locks seem easy that become full of junk can become quite difficult. :akimbo:

As well as all the above suggestions, try noodeling around in the key way with a half diamond. :halfdiamond:

Always worked for me (with these Masters) when I was starting out. This will also give you an idea what pins to work on when SPPing it.

Keep at it.

Re: Issues with with masterlock 01

Thanks guys I'm gonna go pick up a new one tomorrow I don't get much feed back except from pin 3 and 1 can barely feel the others so either I'm doing something wrong or it's the lock. Best way I can figure it out is to get a brand new one :)

Re: Issues with with masterlock 01

If you're not sentimental about the lock (I know a lot of people hate this stuff with a burning passion ), blast the insides with a good load of WD-40 to try and clear any muck out, work it through with picks, get the stuff down all the little cracks and leave it to stew overnight, possibly in a bath of the stuff. If it still feels the same after it's been dried off it's probably not going to get any better.

Re: Issues with with masterlock 01

Let us know if you get the old one open. I've had a couple of masters give me trouble like this. But get them eventually
macgng; it's completely unnecessary to have ~15$ in keys for a 50¢ lock ... but we all do it anyway :P
