Re: American 747 disassembly

Upon further inspection, there is NO screw under the shackle on my padlock.
The cover plate 'appears' like it would be removable like the pics Riy shared.
Very strange...

Yup, have to take the shackle out to get the steel plug out of the way to open it up.

I believe the current model is 748, not 787.

Correct. The current ones are called 748s. I assume the name change was due to the confusion of the planes with the same name.

Mine is a 747 with the code XFM (March, 1992). They updated how you take them apart. Instead of taking out the screw and then sliding that little metal piece out of the way you now have to take out the shackle and it will let the spring and a metal slug out. Then you can slide out this keyed metal cover. There is a divot in it that the metal slug in the bottom of the shackle hole sits in and acts like a pin at shear line.

Unfortunately I dont have a key for this one. I could send it your way Gordon :D

We use an SC-20 keyblank & shave off/file off the bottom until it fits you may need to file a bit off the top too

I removed the epoxy and hex screw, a small steel pin dropped out, I was able to remove the shackle and spring but still not sure how the plate and cylinder come out.

My lock works so it's not a big deal, just curious.

Hey,

I'm in the 747 club - scored an older model: old-style logo and numbers rather than letters used for the date code.

Vancouver - sliding body or retainer plug style?

Re: American 747 disassembly

Well for those looking for blanks for the 747/748, the ILCO number for the blanks is A1041D.

Just as a side note, just received a Series 748 lock made in 2011. It comes apart like my Series 747 lock made in 1983 - the same lock as in this original post!

I am not familiar with that blank - can you show the reverse side?

Re: American 747 disassembly

No problem, Jeff.

Image

And for those of you who are thinking that you need a large, beefy lock, and feel that the 747/748 are the one for you... here is the 748 next to the Kasp 19070X.

Image

But it does look beefy from the top.

Image

Oh, wait. That's the Kasp, too. Yes, the 747 is is a very beefy lock, and MUCH larger than most of the locks you will find in a store. But the Kasp is just plain humongous.

Heya Gordon,

I have no idea. Even after reading through the thread again I'm not sure how to tell the difference. Also, I haven't yet received the lock.

Perhaps you can tell from these photos? I do like the old vintage logo though :)

American Lock - Series 747 - older model - front
American Lock - Series 747 - older model - back

That Kasp of yours is gorgeous - how did you get ahold of that beauty?

Why do your pics say it's a model 727?
