Dimple Steering Wheel Lock

Got this from a thrift shop for $5 yesterday. :D

Image

No, the Bogota picks were not included.

Knew it was for a steering column, but not how it worked at first. The thrift shop thought the same thing, and they knew they had the key, but it was locked up and the person with the key to the keys would not be back for about 5 minutes. Bought the lock and said I’d take it out to the car and be back in a few minutes for the key.

Repicked it for the camera, but Rai’s Bogota set made very short work of this lock. (Under 1 minute). 12 pins (four on each side, staggered from each other, and four more on one edge).

Image

Took it back in (taken apart) to get the key, and they were shocked - how had I opened it? Told them I was a Harry Potter fan, and had been practicing my ‘alohomora spell’, and had to go out to the car to get my wand. Did not tell them that Rai made the magic wand.

Anyway, here is how it works… Use the key (or your picks) to unlock it. (There are no security pins)

Image

Then remove the bottom ‘U’ shaped part.

Image

Get to a steering wheel (preferably your own).

Image

Put the main bar in place from behind the steering wheel, feeding the loop over the top of the horn.

Image

Slide the ‘U’ part into the holes (fgarci… mind your manners! )

Image

Remove the key, and close in the ‘U’ part until it fits firmly under the steering column.

The proper key, and my universal key set. ;)

And that is how this type of steering lock works. No, don’t plan on using this lock. Got it for the unique shape and the dimple lock.

Wow~ I have never seen that design before. I usually only see the ones that go across the front of the steering wheel. Nice find!

Wow!!! I get to show Marduk a lock that is cool! Normally it is the other way around. :D

Can you explain the function of the spring/safety pin in your universal key set?
Thanks

It holds the two picks in the Bogota set together. (They nest perfectly, then fit inside the spring). The set normally stays in my wallet, but there have been times when I clipped it under my shirt collar, inside my jacket, or to my socks. It keeps them securely in place. It is another of Rai's great ideas.

Good question. :)
