Thought there was a post by Oldfast on these, but can't seem to find it using my phone, so here is my post on this unusual lock.

Master No. 35 Trailer Lock

Found this beast at a yard sale recently. Have seen pictures of them before, but never had one in hand.



This lock takes a standard Master M1 key blank.



As the title stated, this is for locking trailer hitches. (Fifth wheel hitches). The flat part end of the kingpin fits into here...



When locked, the plug is turned and blocks this hole.


Turning the key...



And unlocked...



Then use a screwdriver to turn the locking bolt, which is threaded down into the kingpin.





When the bolt is firmly in place holding the trailer kingpin, then you remove the screwdriver and turn the key back to the locked position.


This was made back when no Master Lock had any security pins, so it picks very easily. Got it for the uniqueness of the lock. It is very large, too.

I'm not so sure that is for a fith wheel king pin. We have that set up for our bumper pull trailers. That slides over the flange on the ball hitch and you screw in the set screw and lock it. We've been using one for years, I'de show you a picture of it in use, but it is out with the trailer at the moment and won't be back till next week.

Look like a cool lock Gordon, how heavy is it? It seems to be a massive piece of metal

I still don't really get what is it for, is it to lock this part?

Why would I want to lock it?
Would it go where the shiny rod goes though perpendicular to the main axis (on the picture) ?

At the bottom is the kingpin this would lock onto.

Gordon, This video is of another brand of hitch lock, but it works on the same principle as the Master #35. The big difference between them other than the key is that the Master has a bolt that screws up from the bottom, into the ball socket and the other one has a pin that slides up into the socket. Thay make a totally doifferent lock for the king pins. Check out Master Lock #387 . Mark

Ahh, now I how it should be used for that kind of coupler. Never seen one used in the wild, so had to make some guesses.

It looks like it works in a similar way.

Cool. I'll have to take a closer look at mine.
Maybe they're all slighty different designs
for use on a variety of different hitches.

I'm not real sure of the number designations, but I know they had one for 1 7/8 & 2" couplers and another for 2 5/16" couplers. Mark

We had this lock on our trailer that we had im storage a 3 hour drive away. We got there to move it and we didn’t have the key and would not have been able to get it off with out referencing this thread. Recognizing the fact that this post is 10 years old, felt it necessary to still say thanks into the void!
