E.M.R. Padlock

E.M.R. Padlock

Received this lock over a year ago, and finally got around to making a key for it. It was nice looking, but thought it was no more than a normal lever lock until I made the key. Then had to go back and take pictures for a write-up that I had never intended.

Image

Not a large padlock.

Image

Only three levers, not difficult to make a key.

Image

So why bother with a write-up? Because found the locking mechanism to be unique from anything I had seen thus far.

Locked…

Image

Unlocked… See that post that is sticking up? Here is where it gets unique.

Image

That post rises up from the lock body, moving the shackle with it, as the key is unlocked. It also has a separate spring that swings the shackle back once the lock is open.

Image

Image

Notice the lack of color on my fingers as I try to hold the shackle up - the spring pulling it back down is very strong!

Image

If the key is kept at the full-turn, the shackle does not snap down, and you can see how high that post rises before it releases the shackle.

Image

Here are the markings:

Image

They look to say…

E.M.R.
PARIS
8TS S.C.D.C.

Have no idea what any of that means. Guessing that E.M.R. is the manufacturer. If anybody here has any ideas as to age, and what the markings represent, please post it here!

So that is my unusual lock du jour!

Gordon

Re: E.M.R. Padlock

Quite interesting. I have seen a similar design once somewhere... Can't recall where or when.
Anyhow it is an interesting and clever design :)
