Congrats! I suggest the little Baofeng UV5 dual-bander...for $60, it's a nice little radio. Programming software sucks - but manually programming it is no big deal.

I've bought 4 of them. Gave one as a gift, use the other one, and have 2 spares!

Welcome to the hobby! I passed my tech over a year ago, and love it!
I have a Baofeng UV-5R HT (handheld) for VHF and UHF, and Amazon now has them for around $35, not a bad starter radio.the Wouxun (pronounced ocean) and TYT radios aren't bad either for being Chinese made.

The FT-60 is nice and I am considering that one too, but for a few buck more the VX-6R is a lot better as it is submersible and mil strength.
Also the VX-6R is easier to open the TX for out of band ops such as MARS, or other uses...

I break things LOL and the VX-6R seems a bit tougher...

Currently I have FT-8900R Quad band, several Motorola GP300's both VHF & UHF, an Alinco dual-band HT DJ560

Want a old relic 2 meter mobile?
Have a FT-227r someone gave me...
FREE except the shipping...
Probably not worth it though weighs a lot for a 10 watt mobile, the shipping is likely more than it's worth...
