Risks of Posting Photos

Given the nature of what we do around here, this is VERY much worth while to mention.
I know this is old news. And I know many people have known this for awhile now.
But I'm betting there's just as many people that have never given it a thought.

Smartphones now attach, embed, & store where a photo was taken. Exact GPS coordinates.
In turn, every photo or video you share online has a footprint which can be accessed.
Ignorance or carelessness could potentially put you, or worse yet, others at risk.

1. Google search, "What information can be derived from a picture posted online?"
This will yield a slew of stories and research that will open your eyes to the possibilities.

2. Google search, "How to turn off geo tag on (whatever phone you have)?"
Or, "How to remove photo location info on the (whatever phone you have)?"
You'll find simple directions on how to disable geo tags on your phone.
You can also edit and remove such info on previously taken photos.

Just load and re-save them in your favorite image processing software... just make sure it doesn't actually keep the metadata around from the old image! (Check settings + verify that they are gone from the resulting image)
You probably want to do this to scale the gigantic images modern cameras produce anyways.

That will just recompress your image, losing data in the process and lowering quality. What you want is an EXIF-data erasing tool, if we are talking about JPG's (which probably covers 99.9% of use-cases here).

See second sentence :fu:

And preferably save as PNG the second time around to avoid this :).
If you want to upload a JPG as-is, try http://digitalconfidence.com/BatchPurifier.html
