Hello guys,

I am really intersted in opening a realtor's lock box that i got from a locksmith. I will include a pic with this post. The lock box uses the alphabet letters instead of your normal numbers for the combination. the website states that it uses 3 letter combinations, for example dog, cat, etc. to unlock it. The locksmith that gave it to me drilled a hole into the body of the lock I'm guessing to try and look inside at the wheel and maybe figure the code, but was unsucessful. If anyone knows how to open this type of lock I would appreciate the help. I did ask Oldfast since he is good at safe manipulation, but since this is not actually a safe he could not help me. I did try to shim the lock open to no sucess.

I inserted several links up above for you to be able to look at the picture of the lock box. Wasn't sure which I needed to insert so I posted all 3 links.

Thanks for any ideas of information.

Rick

I use a Semi-destructive method.
Screwdriver behind door, pry a little.
Push down on button, Spin dial to find a gate(real or false?).
whatever feels the lowest.
Other screwdriver on top of latch, hit latch down while prying door out.

usually works fine. And allows you to access the back to reset combo.

Yes ugly, but work most of the time.

will be watching for others with the correct way.

Thanks

I should have said tap the latch down, you're not trying to break the latch off.

Thanks for the response jharveee. This lock belongs to a customer of the locksmith I got it from and he wants me to try non destructive method first and if that doesnt work I will try it your way. I appreciate your help and will post whatever happens. One of the guys in the chat room told me to try and stick a paperclip in the hole that is close to the dial and see if I can feel anything. I'm gonna try that tonight and see wht happens. It's funny i cant find anything on the net on how to decode or crack this lock. I think I may have discovered something that is not explained on the net??? That would be a first, right? Lol

I would try pushing the latch down and spinning the dial. When it stops or snags, see how wide the gates are by rocking the dial back and forth. If you only find 3 spots where it snags try the 6 combinations. If the gates feel 2 or 3 numbers wide we are only taking about 650 to 2200 combinations. Should be pretty easy to brute force like a master combo lock.

While reading the replys to this thread, I noticed advice to push the shackle down while looking for gates. All the information I have seen so far on combo padlocks says to pull up on the shackle not push down.

On my Master Fortress combo, I get no feel at all while pushing down on the shackle but some while pulling up, still at the wrong place but feedback never the less.

I know less than nothing about combos so let me know if I am doing this wrong..

pulling up on your combo is correct.
pushing down on the lock box works cause the bolt, latch and what I would call the fence are one piece, all in a line.
Your combo most likely has a paw on the end of a cam that rotates to push the fence into the gates.

Oddly enough there is a master lock "Drill-away" available to view.
Picture is worth a thousand words.

Manipulation. Haven't taken that class yet.

so many other things to learn.

Oh, it on the list.

I like all the comments. I'm getting lots of ideas. I have tried all of the above with no luck. I think that I'm thinking of this lock as a safe and it is not a safe. It is a padlock like the master padlocks but uses letters instead of numbers. Is this correct or incorrect?

Hope someone else can answer that one.
Kinda of like saying a ford pinto is the same as a Cadillac. Both cars and operate basically the same. Yet different.
Dials
wheels
gates
false gates
fences
spindle
drive wheel
need combo to open

I haven't seen a "safe" with a shackle.
I don't know.

Letter v.s. numbers not a big deal really. Replace the letters on the dial with numbers. let A=1, B=2, C=3 and so on.
perhaps divide the Dial into 35 numbers like on a master combo padlock.
The number of false gates would have to be the same as a true master lock combo to utilize the method for cracking combo.

Yeah, I wish I could have been more help. But I'm glad you posted. Eager to see what everyone says.

Great pics from jharvee. Hard to say as I've never played with one like this. But looking at the internals, it seems
it's not the shackle you'd want to pull while you're turning the dial. Did you receive any feedback at all when you
turned the dial while pushing the tab down lightly (as easy-e mentioned)? If you can catch even one gate, that
would greatly reduce the number of possible combinations.

The one I have is a Supra brand, but am betting similar. You get tons of feedback while pushing down on latch and spinning dial. I can always find the last letter in the combo. push latch down, "click". you're stuck in a false gate, release pressure on latch, keep truing, "click" another false gate. Keep going all the way around the dial. you notice(on mine) ever other letter is a false gate. No, wait. there it is...something different. Dial slides over two almost three letters. Last gate has been found.

I am watching the latch while doing this. It drops down 2/3 of the way towards the open position.
Normally at this point I would employ my Hammer technique, as I have gotten the latch to the almost open.

moving on. After making note of the Letter and wheel you believe you have solved.
Find a Gate on the second wheel.

This is where I guess the spinning starts. And where I get stumped.
While exploring the second wheel, you move the third wheel(Drive wheel).

Guessing you continue to search wheel two in same manner, but have to spin the dial ahead to check wheel two, Backwards to reset wheel three. push down on latch check if latch drops lower than before. Same all the way around wheel two.

Yep, Lost.
If I can only find the letter on wheel two, then its a no brainier to find wheel one........just try every letter.

Please give it a try and tell me what yours is doing.
