No it's not direct drive, the lock has a bolt that once withdrawn will allow the handle mechanism to move.
If time is not an issue you might manipulate it open for your first experience but prepare for it go take a very long time depending on your abity to pick it up (I'm saying this might take you months or years to learn manipulation on going from what you've already said).
You need to read up on feeling contact points.
Not really the right terminology to suggest a straight tail piece on combo locks, you're referring to direct drive amongst other terms but as I say this isn't a direct drive.
I agree with hoarder, it looks like a yale dial but we need better pictures and how many wheels it has, it could be something totally different to your average 3 wheel s&g lock and it could be a lot harder or indeed easier to open than one.
That all said it could be anything behind that dial if the lock or dial has been updated or renewed at some stage for any reason.
The easier, quicker and sure fire way is to drill and scope but that's the box opener in me coming out.
Lastly, I don't really watch YouTube so I'm not so sure it's going to teach you manipulation too well depending on who you're watching but i was once asked to proof read an article by deviant ollam on safe manipulation which I thought would be good for a noob to understand what you're trying to accomplish, it might be worth printing that out for a read if it's still out there somewhere.
