Long Manipulation

This Safe sits outside the Locksmith shop I work at.
On the day I went in for my interview i saw it.
I knew that day, I would manipulate that old box open.
So, I arrive early to work every day and sometimes I take a few minutes to spin the dial.
Just about the time I get my hands on the dial, another co-worker would arrive and say "it's time to go inside and start working".
Some days or even weeks went by without being able to work on it.
I had the third number of the combination for about a month before I had time continue.
Even after finding the 1st and 2nd combo numbers, the safe wouldn't open.
You could hear the lever drop in and feel the bolt retract, But the door was stuck firm.
Rusted and painted shut. Used a rubber mallet and tapped around the seam of the door.
Had one of the stronger workers give it a few tugs.
More weeks go by.
About once a week I would dial the combo and give it a try. Finally, on a hot afternoon it popped open. How long? About 1 year.

Re: Long Manipulation

jharveeEEEEeeee! Ha! I love it!! Congrats.

So, could I bug you for some more details? I'm probably just being
an idiot... but how exactly does the doors' bolt interact with the
lock bolt to actually secure the door?

Also, if and when you have time, I'd love some better quality pics;
A close-up of the dial and the lock guts with the cover plate off.

So what of the lower door? Another year maybe? :D lol

Re: Long Manipulation

Looks like an extended lock bolt slips behind the jamb to lock. Looking at it with bifocals.

There is also one on the back.
It is a Star. Several parts are missing and the round door swings open freely.
The three compartments are not interconnected.
The Round door on the front may still be working? I can feel wheels pick up, but no contact points.
Maybe welded shut? Hadn't spent much time looking at it yet.

The main compartment has a Sargent Greenleaf 6730.
Check out the screw placement on the cover.? And the Screws.
Must be older model?
It's lock bolt is attached to a one inch round rod that has a spring inside that square block.
When you retract the bolt, it pull back the rod, also pushes it into a hole on the Jamb side.

My boss may have issue with me pulling the back off. Sorry, no gut shots.
Although,...I had thought about changing the combo as a prank.

Re: Long Manipulation

No worries on the pics... especially if it's an S&G.
Looks like a neat 'ol dial on that one though.

Ok, the way that bolt extends & retracts makes sense.

Thanks. And really great to see you're still spinnin'.

Here's the Dial.
The one color paint job didn't help any.
But I like the Artist idea to put a key hole on it.

Re: Long Manipulation

It is difficult to tell how deep this box is. Can you give us a rough idea? From the first pics I never would have guessed that the third door existed!

Re: Long Manipulation

Didn't measure but close to 24" deep. The safe on the back is only 6 to 8 inches deep. You can see the back wall step forward, looking at the bottom rusty shelf.
