Re: Diebold 177-23

Picked up one of these super cheap on ebay (was actually listed as an electronic lock, but the photos were clear enough) that arrived today, mine's the 177-23B version. A little dirty but seems to be in good working order. Needs a dial and spline key, tho... any tips on where I could find a dial to fit this? Looks like a 1/4" shaft, or maybe metric? Also looking for a cheaper change key option... MBA wants $35 for theirs, and Lockmasters has the same thing for $72!! Can't see why they'd be so expensive...

Jharveee, did you ever get yours running smoothly? Have you manipulated it? Looks like it should be a fairly easy manipulation...

edit: nevermind on the change key, my S&G key fits it perfectly...

Re: Diebold 177-23

I have seen so far three types of shafts.

1) Square without spline key. Used in M-Locks and Cawi
2) Screw type with M9 threading. Used in the old and big Kromer locks.
3) Screw type with 5/16" threading. Used by everything else, i.e. S&G, LG, small Kromer.

So if one doesn't have a dial for a lock it is worth trying a S&G dial first. The spline keys look also very similar.

Re: Diebold 177-23

I did try that first, but you can tell at a glance it's smaller than the S&G shaft... I only have SAE screw sizes in my test set, and the closest to fitting is the 1/4-28, but I think the threads are tighter than 28tpi, so my guess is maybe m6x32 or something thereabouts?

Re: Diebold 177-23

Ending up getting the Keedex K-18 set of change keys, So I would have a valid reason to buy locks to match.
Yes, now spins very smooth. Hard for me to feel wheels pick up.
Every now and again you will find Dials for sale on Ebay. Keep an eye out.

Madsamurai,
PM me your info. I took a look around and found I still had an extra Dial. It's yours if you want it.

Re: Diebold 177-23

Also, does anyone have servicing info about these? Mine had some grease on the wheels, however it also had delrin washers between wheels & flies so really shouldn't need grease. I spent some time cleaning it all up last night and wiped that old grease all off, and it still feels like it turns nice and smooth without it. Not sure if the grease was factory or locksmith-added, and if I should reapply something or leave it clean.

Re: Diebold 177-23

It think it is more likely that there is to much than to less grease. Wiping it of might have left exactly the right amount and as it feels right I would leave it as it is.

To mount my Dial I countersunk a washer into the face of the wood so the spindle would be supported.

Re: Diebold 177-23

yeah, I've got it on a plastic practice mount with a metal face and it seems ok... I really feel like there should be a spring washer in there.

Re: Diebold 177-23

I saw that exact lock on Ebay madsamurai and almost bought it. Glad to see it went to another manipulator!
