HID Readers

Does anyone know how to install a HID Reader? My new boss wants me to learn how to install a HID reader that is powered thru the main electrical circuit, no stand-alone power supply. They use a fob too. Didn't ask if they have a computer to do audit trails. They use an electric mortise lock with wires going thru the middle hinge which then is connected to wires they showed me thru the wall.

I said I could always learn it. I signed up with HID on their website and will do some studying. But any help will be appreciated.

This new boss is a commercial real estate broke whom I'm working in construction at the moment, doing demolition for remodeling.

My question is though, as I have my own business license and resale license. If he asked me to buy him lock hardware, am I supposed to use his money to buy it at cost for him, or am I supposed to get it wholesale for myself, then sell it to him for a profit.

Because if he want me to get him hardware, I was going to tell him he has to do it with his company, not mine because it's my resale license.

I'm just unawares of what to do.

Any advice will be appreciated.

A boss should have his own contacts/accounts/discounts with suppliers.

Unless he recipricates favors with you,
then BE in business and make a buck for your investment (contacts, brains, licences, picking it up, etc)
Knowing WHERE to find something is half the trick in business.
The other part is having commercial accounts at the right places.

That is part of your reason for commission for what you do: "special knowledge".

If there are warranty issues, he will expect you to deal with them on your time.
Probably even tech support.
You made nothing on it, now you have to deal with warranty and trouble-shooting for free ???
Oh, and if he didn't know where to buy it before, he will now when you hand him the cash receipt for the purchase (with your name on it).
Would that get you into trouble with your supplier ?

when tax time comes, will you have to pay tax for buying and reselling it (at cost)?
Is he going to give you a tax number for that purpose??
Will the tax you didn't pay when buying it now be due plus "value-added" tax on the resell price because it changed hands.

The real estate people are always trying squeeze me, but can only help me if I'm buying or selling my house. so not much to trade, unless he brings you all his clients who buy houses and all actually DO get rekeyings and new deadbolts at minor or no discount.
That is to say he brings you business you otherwise would not have access to.

I've seen where bosses act all "offended" or like if youre not willing to just do it, but see it for what it is, work-place bullying.
Guilt, a easy & free way to get your way.

I had a boss who explained to me how he owns me and everything i can do and all i own.

Do you have any low voltage experience at all? I don't mean to sound like a dick but do you know how to use a multimeter well? To tell if there is a change of state in a switch, or tell how much amperage a device is drawing etc? You might want to get some help with this on a more formal level.

Re: HID Readers

Thank you guys for your replys, but I have quit that job as it was causing me lower back pain. I would actually wake up every morning with lower back pain.

I dealt with it by stretching my lower back and lifting the correct way but other factors made me quit.

The boss said I would learn construction but basically I was learning from a bunch of handy-men.

I found a job now working with auto and safes and I'm getting paid $10 an hour right now, cash.

The boss said they will put me on the payroll now, as in getting paid by check, and they will get me a raise.

So now my question is how much should I be paid.

I subscribe to the Locksmith Ledger and The National Locksmith.

I'm also a member of the National Safeman's Organization and I'm thinking about joining the ALOA organization.

So my question is, how much do you think I should be making.

My skills are mostly shopwork, I can open cars, determine safe combinations when the safes are open.

I don't have skills in installing electric strikes, making lost keys for cars, etc.

CLH!

Re: HID Readers

Here are a couple links to average locksmith or safe tech wages. Are you able to do most shop work? How much experience do you have in locksmithing?

Re: HID Readers

When you say "HID readers" here, to me that means just the readers themselves and not the actual system that decides whether you're authorized and operates the lock? From what I know, HID sells readers and tags, but maybe the situation and terminology is different in the US?
The post implies that there's actual "intelligence" involved as well, so I'm curious.
