I did use a mill, it was pretty hard metal.
Thanks Oldfast, I was also able to see why your method on manipulating them works. At least for the 1st number. The bottom of the reset piece barely touches the 1st wheel.

I've never had an 'inside view' of my method actually taking place. LOL

I have an old master combo I haven't manipulated yet. Now that I have an idea where to cut I may have to sacrifice it in an attempt to emulate your work. (won't be near as pretty as a I don't have access to the right tools)
