Diebold 177-39 combo locks with stainless doors

I was talking with a seller on ebay. He has a bunch of Diebold 177-39 combo locks with dials, rings, spline keys, etc for sale at a fairly decent price. They were removed from a bank vault. He also has the stainless steel doors that they were attached to. They make one hell of a cool mount Unfortunately no change keys available.

Locks are $35 alone, the doors are an additional $20.

Is the Diebold 177 series a good one to start on? I know the S&G 6741 is preferred, but the 177 is Group 2 as well, right? Just wondering if there is a big jump in difficulty between a 6741 and a Diebold 177.

I am not sure on that. But he has them up for $31 and change now. The door is a really cool mount. Very heavy.

with the door and shipping my cost is like $70, I thought he was giving folks the option that your $35 dollar lock can be shipped with or without the door, not that the door is $20 extra.. I told him I'll get back to him in a week, gotta think about it..

Nope, door was always $20 extra. Pretty much what he was going to get for scrap prices.

Is the Diebold 177 series a good one to start on? I know the S&G 6741 is preferred, but the 177 is Group 2 as well, right? Just wondering if there is a big jump in difficulty between a 6741 and a Diebold 177.

I have one and it is a very straight forward open. Good for learning with less dialing resistance than 6741. Your experience may vary, however. I have only worked with one of them.

I just mounted a 177-23 last week. The one I have is older, but like Trevor mentioned, it was a straight forward opening. I've manipulated it twice with no issues, and it wasn't any more difficult than the S&G 6700 locks I have. Mine has an issue with the dial grinding on the dial ring when all of the forward and backward slop is taken out, so I mounted it with a little play in the dial so that I can pull the dial out and let it spin freely. Could be operator error in the mounting .

I have a few. Sometimes they ARE pretty straight forward just as Trevor & Mike mentioned.
Other times though, I find the gate sigs to be VERY slight. Like a drop of only 2/10 to 3/10.

I'd go for it!! That way by the time you start on an S&G
the gates will appear like nice deep craters for you
Although that doesn't always happen either. lol

Also, most Diebolds are just plain beautiful locks. I like em'

Which change key do they use? I ordered one but will need to be able to change the combo eventually. I can't seem to find any online

Think it is a standard Diebold change key. (three wheel).

Daggers, I think that is a replacement blade for a folding key set. Which is awesome, by the way. If you want to get into safe locks this is worth its weight. The keys are all investment cast stainless, much more durable that the cheaper factory keys. If this is a replacement though it will not have a handle of any kind, since it is made to go into the set. Oh, and your original question, I believe it will work.

Got mine today but it's not really the diebold I was expecting. It's basically a s&g 6700 with a cool looking dial

EDIT: I'm being sent a replacement! Good guy to buy from but not a lock person so make sure you let him know what you want if you decide to buy one. Great person to deal with though, willing to correct mistakes
