Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

After a series of failed attempts I decided to go with something simple. So here it is:

The handles are made of 316 stainless, marine grade. Big thanks again to Alaphablue for that materiel. The blade is brass feeler gauge stock. I'm not sure what alloy this time but I know it's a lot softer than the 464 I'd been working with. Tried the JB Weld this time, so far so good.

Brass picks, huh? I guess it makes sense since the lock is brass, but this is the first time I've seen it.

It doesn't bend too easily?

Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

I'm not sure yet. I just finished it today and the JB Weld has only had a couple hours to cure so I haven't tried it. My guess would be that it will bend easily so it will have to be used very gently. Not that practical but I got the idea and had to try it. It's getting hard to come up with new stuff, you guys have done everything already!

That looks wicked you probably get good feedback they look space age star trek picks you might have to pin those handles . I am working on a slide on ss handle held on the pick with a set screw so it can be put on any pick I make .

Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

I've been wanting to try that for awhile now but I haven't found any set screws that are the right size/shape to do what I want yet. The closest I could find would require the handle to be way too thick. Please post some pics when you get it done, I'd really like to see that.

Oh, and I didn't rivet it because you sent me the bastard steel from hell. This stuff is strong man, I'm not sure I could drill it.

Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

Ya if you made a slide on handle out of that stuff it would be the only one you ever had to make. I have 45 square feet of that stuff I use it for knife guards and buttcaps for the handles . Make your own set screws cut threaded rod an slit the top for a flat head screwdriver . Mine is a long way from finished like you said it's tough shit might take a month .

Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

If anybody was wondering the brass pick held up rather well. I've used it to open a couple of my easier locks and though there is some slight scratching it held its shape just fine. I was using a light touch but hey, I probably should be anyways.

Even if the pick dosent last you will not have to make handles for the next one .

Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

I was a little bored and started this project having no idea how excruciatingly tedious it would become. I gave up halfway through.

So, any Trekkies here?

That's neat. Haven't been around in a few... the latest hook looks great man!

Also interesting to hear the brass pick has held up ok so far.

Re: Aedalas' picks and stuff

Thank you all, your appreciation is appreciated.

And Oldfast, the brass did hold up but it gets scratched fairly easy. I'd recommend that if anybody tries this they get a harder alloy than the feeler gauges as they are apparently softer than whatever is used for locks.
