Yo LSA, you know the spacing on that key tool you made? Are those spaces specific to each lock type or can the tool be used for different locks? The same with the amount of space between the pins?
Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
its lock specific, whatever locks use the same space and depth charts are interchangeable with this tool... besides keyway i still couldnt use a schlage tool in a kwikset lock...
Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
nice technique !!! some years ago I used the foil comb pick from Falle on Tesa locks with a specific tensioner
Today I opened a Fr Vachette V5 lock with your method. It is a difficult lock to open and to impression because most of the drivers have false cuts and rounded pins. (like the Tesa locks) It took me more time than you on this lock. I think because I used an adhesive aluminium foil which was too thick but ... I got it !!
I will post some pics later ... thanks again to show us this nice technique. I will improve my next "comb blank" with a better pin lift up steel blade

As soon as I find my dremel I'm going to make a key and try this on my mortise cylinder. I want a key for it and making one myself would certainly put a spring in my step.

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
If you want an actual key for it, try impressioning one the traditional way instead of this method. This method wont give you a long term working key and I would imagine decoding and code cutting based off of foil impressioning will be hit or miss as well due to the difficulty of removing the 'key' without disturbing the foil.
I started playing around with impressioning a few weeks ago and I now have keys to all of my locks (my collection doesn't include any high security locks at this point however).

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
I would agree that impressioning is more reliable way to get a key... BUT this is a good start... if you use foil impressionins, decode a key cut it a lil high and impression the rest... kinda a combined meathod you can cut your time... unless you can impression like joswayers and can impression faster than most can pick..

That's what I was figuring, use the foil impression to decode from, but I hadn't thought about cutting it a little high.
Thanks for the advice (Vitti too ) I can't wait to get some blanks, dig out my file set and give impressioning techniques a shot.

Started working on a kwikset one can't get it to fit in between warding on my lOck yet gonna have to get a wider one
Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
for partially decoding a lock ... put some adhesive aluminium foil on a bump key adapted to the lock ... of course it will not open the lock but it will partially decode the lock at least the shorter pins ... (the key will "give" on both sides) ... then ... impression the other pins in the classic way with a file
Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
Nice work ,good to see it works.
Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...
here is the DIY comb key I made for opening the Vachette lock pictured above. I'm making other tests on different locks now
