Douggie's Camo Pick Roll (prototype completed, photos)

Hi Guys

So on my video I asked if anyone had any ideas of what they'd sort of pick case they'd like to see me make. as i make bags and purses which I sell on my market stalls making a pick case should be pretty easy.

Wizwazzle said he'd like to see one in british DPM camo with a magnet to hold it together.

Well I've just purchased a few meters of "super strong" (i can't actually tear this stuff even when I cut a small nick into the fabric) DPM polycotton

I've looked into using a flexible magnetic strip like wizwazzle suggested, but I really don't think it will be secure enough, i do however have some magnetic snaps I use for handbags that are really strong, so i reckon these will offer better security. However I'll try both.

So what would be really helpful now is if people could give me an idea of just how many picks they would carry on average, and weather you would want extra pockets for holding any other type of tools?

I'm going to make the pockets out of a black elasticated cotton, so the picks will slip in easy and stay in place.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, i'll update more pics as I get started

I'm honestly stoked about this. I already want one. I carry 14 Peterson's professionally (I use that loosely) and six as a back up in my vehicle. I always carry four tension wrenches.

That's awesome Doug. Thank-you for bringing and offering your craft skills to the forum. I suspect that you
will find a very receptive market here. I too am interested in a tool roll.

So what would be really helpful now is if people could give me an idea of just how many picks they would carry on average, and weather you would want extra pockets for holding any other type of tools?

Due to the wide variation in handle design in both commercial and homebrew/custom picks I think it will be difficult to arrive at a useful average which you can use to guide your design. I suppose the average can serve as the minimum capacity. Personally, I would like at least 30 pockets of varying widths -- to snuggly hold a variety of pick handles. There is also a wide variety of tension tool designs to accomodate eg. wish bone style, long offset picks and prybar styles.

It would also be great to be able to hold at least one tool for the locks we are seeing more of: dimple, disc detainer and perhaps cruciform. Room for a small plug spinner would also be useful. The capacity to hold a curtain pick would be useful for Australians and the British. All of these tools could be accomodated by including few extra wide pockets.

I'm going to make the pockets out of a black elasticated cotton, so the picks will slip in easy and stay in place.

That's a good idea because with non-elasticised pockets that aren't designed around a particular tool stuff can fall out. My only concern would be with the potential for the cotton to snag sharp edged tools. Some picks -- eg the authentic Bogota rakes -- are stored handle up so the jagged ends enter the pocket and with repeated inserttion and removal this tends to abrade the edge of the pocket. This problem also occurs with double-ended picks.

Can I suggest that the tool roll include a vertical flap that runs the length of the roll across the top and extends at least a half-way down the pockets? This would serve two purposes: (a) should the elasticised pockets fail when the roll is inverted the tool won't fall out of the roll but will be caught by the flap; and (b) when unfolded the flap provides a clean and dry surface to place the picks tensions that you are alternately using and trying.

I'm excited to see what you come up with.

Goods points there piotr, I may make the pockets out of the same cama fabric as it's v strong, and just use a strong elastic nylon ( maybe stronger than cotton) across the top. The only down side of this is it may be a little extra work, but hopefully not to much.

I like the idea of the top flap and have included it in my design. I'm thinking of adding small buttoned pockets for the tension wrenches these are so small that using the same kind of pocket as the picks may not be secure enough.

Probably wont get a chance to start on this for a few days, but I will post picks as soon as i get to work.

Re: Douggie's Camo Pick Roll

OK here's the design I'm going for, it's just a rough so dimensions might be a bit out.

I've found some magnet tape that i was going to use for securing the roll but I didn't feel it would be sufficient, however I have tested how a few strips hold my metal handled sparrows and I works quite nicely.

So the first row of pockets will be magnetic, the second row elastic, and the third pocket is one large one with several adjustable straps at the top to hold any large tools. following that is one large zip pocket and two small velcro or buttoned pockets. These's are for holding tension tools that may be a bit small to safely secure in the other pockets.

I'll start cutting the fabric tonight, but i dont think i'm going to get a chance to sew for a few days. So this project will probably take a couple of weeks to get finished. Busy with kids, girlfirend and decorating, work, shit, the list goes on!!!

I'm thinking of a black velvet lining with al the pockets and straps made of the camo material. I though the metal picks would show up nice on it and slide in and out easily.

That's a cool and unique design. There's a place for everything in that design. I think that is the best lock tool specific tool roll design I have seen. Awesome!

Re: Douggie's Camo Pick Roll

Excellent design, I really like the zip pocket addition.
The smaller Peterson tension wrenches i have in my kit continuously fall loose and are a pain to keep in there.
It's a nicely thought out tool roll.

Re: Douggie's Camo Pick Roll

Thanks for the feedback guys, glad to know I'm heading in the right direction with this.

I'm not sure whether to use this black velvet as a lining, or just use the same camo fabric on the inside. All the pockets will be made out of the camo either way, what do you guys think?

The velvet is pretty think and tough so i reckon it will be quite hard wearing and the picks will show up nicely on it, also it has a nice smooth texture. But the camo fabric will be slightly harder wearing.

The Camara lens was a bit dirty which makes it look like there are spots on the velvet.

Re: Douggie's Camo Pick Roll

Hey guys,

this project got stalled while i waited to find a better magnet than the one i had. Anyway this stuff came through the post today, check it out

Image

even when i cover it with fabric it still holds the picks so strips of this will be glued and stitched behind each pocket. I'm thinking of making this roll slightly shorter than originally planned. I will be removing the large pocket with adjustable straps and just have magnetic pockets for my sparrows, southords and storm picks, and elasticated pockets for my petersons, and of course the pockets for my tension wrenchs, that i may also back with this magnet stuff

Re: Douggie's Camo Pick Roll

So i finally got started on this!

I attached the strips of magnet to the back of the pocket using a builders srim that i then stitched in, this will give it extra strengh and keep the magnets nice and solid but allow the roll to roll up properly
Image

Every stress point is secured with triple stitching

Image

all the stitching is hidden behind another layer of fabric and secured with 2 rows of top sticking

The bottom row of pockets is finsih, the top row is yet to have the magnets sewn in
Image

This panel will then be sewn into the main body of the roll.

Let me know what you think so far :)

Re: Douggie's Camo Pick Roll

Thats pretty damn slick, I once tried doing something similar with canvas but I fucked it all up and got a needle in my finger. Seaming stuff is a skill that takes practice and the right type of machine. Well worth the cost IMHO to have it done by someone.
