My deceptive padlock

I took this lock with me to Defcon this year. Unfortunately most of the time everybody was busy with something else, so I didn't get to hand it over to very many people.

Schuyler figured it out really fast, he may have gotten lucky. But that's not the point, he figured it out. ...So, before I handed it to anybody else I attached a note to it that says "Did you pick it correctly?" Yes that was a dick move, but it's fun to be a jerk.

It looks like a regular lock.

Image
But when you pick it or turn the key nothing happens.

Image
To open the lock you need to have the cylinder turned and then press in the piece that normally holds the cylinder in place.

Image
Then the shackle will be free to be pulled out.

Image
It took quite a few tries for me to make these pieces all work together correctly. It's not pretty, but I got it working so I'm happy.

I hope you enjoyed this lock. And maybe, just maybe you should try and remember how it works. Just in case I hand it to you one day.

Well, Schuyler is an exceptional picker so I would except nothing less from him!! He is one of the greats among several others. That is one fine piece of work you got there.
I have been in the souls of many women, but I always end up on the soles of there shoes.

It had less to do with picking, don't get me wrong, he did pick it. But it had more to do with the fact that he figured out how to open it by pressing in the button after it was picked.

As far as his picking skills are concerned I gave him a lot of crap. Pretty much I constantly told him that he should be using a hook pick. It was all in jest (though there might be some truth to it  ), hopefully he doesn't dislike me or anything. :D

He's a good guy and was clearly having fun, which made it fun for everybody else.

Naaapaalm...sticks to kids...it sticks to the belly and it sticks to the ribs...
See those kids standing by the lake...drop some napalm and watch them bake.

It's not an old lock.

It's a lock that I have modified to get it to work that way. I just noticed that I didn't exactly mention that earlier...
