Help with pinning codes - new Best 7pin WG core

Hello wise kp collective,

I am a new hobby picker and have placed an order for a best WG core - as I wanted something with a challenging keyway.
I also asked him to create a challenging pinning with a high-low high-low kind of thing.

The seller/locksmith asked what codes I wanted? This is for or a new Best 7pin WG core.

I am not yet familiar with specific pinning codes, thus any help would be much appreciated in creating a challenging bitting. Note that the core will most likely only be used for picking.

Cheers and thanks,
VancouverSpecial71

Tell him to violate MACS. That should make for a nice and difficult pinning. That said, that lock is going to be quite difficult even with normal bitting. The Wx series of keyways from BEST are generally quite insane. If you want it to be really tough, I'd suggest going with a WK or WB (the WK being the more difficult of the two, possibly of all the Wx series of keyways)

Hello xeo,

Believe me I tried, however what was available was WA WB WC WG.

For reference I attached the image of the Best premium keyways I found that you previously posted (thanks for that by the way!)

cheers

elbowmacaroni,

Thanks for the advice regarding violating MACS.

From your post then you recommend WB as being a more challenging option than WG?

I expect that the Wx keyway will present a major challenge for me as I have had little exposure to difficult keyways, which is why I am trying to get a real challenging lock created.

again, thanks for the advice :)

What is MACS and how is it violated?

Re: Help with pinning codes - new Best 7pin WG core

MACS - Max Adjacent Cut Specification.

It is the highest difference in the pin size that the manufacturer will "allow" on two adjacent pins usually due to some issue with the key functioning improperly on a very wild difference (i.e. a 0 cut next to a 9 and so on). It can be violated and has been violated on many different locks. Just ask selim, he is the king of it.

Re: Help with pinning codes - new Best 7pin WG core

The only problem is that SFICs do not have MACS. IF you wanted the most extreme pinning possible it would have to be 9090909 or something similar.

I was going to say what Riy said. There is no MACS for SFIC.

A difficult bitting is purely a function of the keyway... if the keyway is wide open then even the most insane bitting is a non-issue. With a keyway like a WG BEST, you're basically forced to enter from the front, disturbing mostly all the pins to reach the back pin. If you put a deep cut in pinstack 1 and a max height cut on pinstack 7 you basically won't open that lock without a drill.

great info - i understood the effect of high-low pins that are next to each other - however, the relationship between the first and last pin had not completely sunk in before, particularly when presented with a restricted keyway.

thanks again :)
