S&G 826c

I wrote this a few weeks ago, but never posted it because the pictures aren't great. Wonder what part of this section it belongs in...

I finally got ahold of a military MEDECO original padlock. Keyless of course. Isn't she a beauty?
ImageImageImage
I planned to work on it over the weekend, or at least well into the evening. No such luck. Open in under 2 hours. I was quite pleased with myself, until I took it apart.

Image
I was expecting more of a fight, which I might have gotten if the last 4 cuts weren't center :|
Image

Cheered me up a bit that the vertical biting wasn't a walk in the park.
Image
I had to file alot of material away from this key to make it work, and accidentally filed right through to the other side  I tried another, but it doesn't line the pins up to the sidebar. Looks like it sits straight in the vice, but at a slight tilt when it enters the keyway, so it's trash.

I'd like to beef up the biting and throw some mushrooms in there for round 2, but first I need a working key.

Re: S&G 826c

I want to learn how to pick a Medeco, can somebody recommend one that I can find that isn't so expensive, one that has a keyway big enough to work in! When I get some money, I am going to buy and pick one of these!

Re: S&G 826c

Great work tooly! Its strange to me...that's the second Medeco core for an S&G that I've seen with no mushrooms. Great picking none the less!
Good luck on making a key. I tried to make a key for my core last weekend...vertical bitting was no prob but sadly only 5 of the 6 pins line up with the sidebar. I thought that since there is a 10 degree margin of error that I would have little problem filing the angles by hand but no joy as one of the pins gets stuck in the false gate
BTW...have you read "Open in 30 seconds"?

Here LPK. Never ordered form them but I was thinking about it. If you do buy one let me know I may pick up a few medecos and maybe a keso while I'm at it. be sure to select the option to get a working key or not depends how much you like to beat yourself up

Not that bad on the prices are they! Compared to the locks you find on ebay, everything seems reasonable, at least for an ordinary lock, those collectors seem to get a little high in price though!

Re: S&G 826c

Thanks awol, congradulations on the moderator spot in high sec.

I am trying to get it on vid HC, it's just difficult to capture. Like a sasquatch.

I have picked a few non S&G originals that don't have mushroom pins. The older they are, the more often it seems to be the case. I've read the Tobias book a few times. I had to, because it's like the LSS, a great resource of information, but it reads like a damn legal document. If I remember the book correctly, he is talking more to the 2nd and 3rd generations of medeco having that margine of error, based on the fact they have the fore and aft positions. If the originals had this wider margin, I wouldn't be looking at my fouth attempt making another key for this one. It's a royal pain to approximate a blank for this tight keyway. Keep waiting for a set of keys to pop up on ebay, but the sellers rarely know what kind of blank it is, and it's hard to ID from a photo.

Re: S&G 826c

awesome work mate :!:
Which tool did you use to rotate the pins? hook ?
I have a few of these cores but rotating the pins is a nightmare, because almost all pins have false grooves.

Re: S&G 826c

That keyway is so tight I had to use a peterson slender gem instead of my favorite hybrid hook.
