Sorry for the getting mixed up people about what I posted earlier.

here is my story I went to my local locksmith and he showed me this Sargent And Greenlead Combo lock.

The numbers F1S3 were on the side of this combo lock.

This is what these numbers and letters meant.

The security rating is from 1 to 4 F means :force so F1 means it will withstand a forceful attack of 1 which is the lowest........ S is for ....sereptisious entry.....or...manipulating the lock so S3 means it will withstand this kind of attack to the 3rd degree,

this is a COOL lock!
the Ingersoll / S&G 831-B military issue shrouded padlock.
this lock is the only lock in the world that can be submerged in liquid nitrogen for 1/2 an Hr.
with little effect. (any regular lock would shatter into pieces with a smack of a hammer.)
this is due to 4 ceramic "elements" running the length of the lock body,internally.
this lock is also Blast -Proof,and shrouded to an extreme.
it has a giant double-ball locking mechanism

By that you're saying, that's the only lock that you'd lock your stuff up with? That's one strong a$$ lock!!!

Firstly, Not a double ball bearing lock. Single swing arm that locks into both sides of the shackle. (As seen in 249 - 251 ontop of the cylinder)

johnopsec: you have to remember that these things are Military locks.
I remember being told once that any mechanical mechanism designed for military issue can have no more than 7 replaceable parts. This is so any old G.I. can repair and\or replace any faulty part in the field, without much prior knowledge.

So to completely dismantle this thing (excluding the shackle), you insert the service key, rotate anti-clockwise, pull the shackle out and the block on the side pops out.
Removing this block reveals the locking bar ontop of a plug. That's it.
Shackle, Plug, Locking Bar, Lock Body, and the slider thing. 5 piece lock.
The sliding piece opens a large enough hole for the plug to be completely extracted and replaced with no tools.

This is a true simple-man's lock.

could you post a picture of the keyway. These keys have an expired patent, so blanks are now available through ILCO, unless this is some G-13 kind of thing I believe I do have these blanks in stock. I work primarily with Medeco and Mul-T-Lock PM me and maybe I can send you'se guys some blanks

This is a quote from another forum about medeco patented keyways. :
"That's interesting [...] about the "five level" 61 keyway. It is actually a six level key and the blank is now covered by Federal law with a severe penalty for sale or cutting of the key. That particualr key is called the USG keyway and is used primarily in the S&G 831B padlocks. Highly restricted even within the military. If you remember the name of the maker, you might call Medeco and let them know because it could be really dangerous for all of us if this blank is readily available and gets into the wrong hands."

i got this key from my dad from when he worked he needed it to open some gates the lock was replaced and he gave me it, it looks kinda similar

I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking at. It seems that counter-clockwise on the newly modified "control" key causes the piece in the side to pop out. That part is intuitive. I'm not sure what is going on with the remaining pictures though.

What has happened between #251 and #252? Where did the piece come from in #253? What was its function? In #254, I see the plug but, how was it removed? Also, what are the other pieces? How were they removed? I don'gt see how they would come out the bottom of the lock so, they must come out of the top but, how? Video would be ultimately cool.

Has anyone else dismantled their 831b?

I replaced the medeco 6pin with a LW4 plug, customised the rear end of it to fit into the 831b's unique locking mechanism, now I can cut as many keys as I want.

Much more useful to me now.
