Keyway fear--pictures are a must!

I've had it good. Wide open keyways and easily accessible pins. That can't last forever. :whip:

There are some tough keyways out there to negotiate when picking. Right now, I would rather deal with almost anything other than a Yale paracentric keyway. I suppose there will come a time when I say, "that's nothing!" Hell, you can say it right now if you want. What are the keyways you hate to see when picking?

Re: Keyway fear--pictures are a must!

This one looks very wide open, but if you look, the keyway bends.

Also have an EVVA with a particularly nasty keyway, but don't feel like digging it out at this moment. Also have an LOB padlock with a similar keyway to the EVVA. Maybe MrA can post a pic of that keyway.

Re: Keyway fear--pictures are a must!

The XP1 keyway is cruel! It eats picks.

You get close to picking it & all of a sudden the pick gets very stuck. The lock will usually relinquish the pick if you release tension & drop the pins, but if you try to keep picking, any attempts at progress carries a high risk of permanently bent picks. I've damaged very few picks over many years of picking, but the XP1 has put a bend in a couple.

Re: Keyway fear--pictures are a must!

Here is one from a Federal 740P store display mount. I am not sure if this is a normal or restricted keyway.

And another keymark SFIC just because :D

Re: Keyway fear--pictures are a must!

My lord! What am I complaining about?
The Keymark SFIC or Abus XP1 appear to be the worst shown so far. A couple hard angles before the pick can even touch the pins would be a nightmare. How can the key even lift the pins?
I've seen the keymark before and instantly loved the offset keyway. Is keymark the brand or company name?

Keymark is the name of Medeco's SFIC product.

My best friend just dropped it off an hour ago. He just learned how to drill the control lugs without damaging the housings, and pull the cores without drilling the pins, allowing you to make a control key.

Actually Medeco makes Keymark in several different formats, not just SFIC. Keymark products are normal pin tumbler locks (no rotating pins or sidebar etc) that have really out there keyways specifically made for key control. I believe somebody said that there are a few hundred different keymark keyways.
