This is not the only news story, he got caught and there was a trial in the news.
time magazine did a story on him while he was at large before he got caught, about a year or two before.

its a very difficult story to chase on google.

at various times I have seen different archives of these stories.

Matt Blaze did articles on the locks, and he believes no one ever picked one. he thinks this story is a myth, but I saw it when it was first published and I think the newyorktimes covered it when the guy was caught in southern california

there has been a really effecient coverup of the evidence of how this guys tool worked.

h edward tickel was an FBI lockpicker, he got caught safe breaking in the FBI cafeteria and some more stuff.
he is mentioned on blackbag.nl barry wels site.
he apparently attended a chaos computer convention or some such in germany a few years back

Theres also an article in the last year or so in wired magazine on the CIA's renegade lockpicker

Regarding the WE30C, yes, I fully believe it can be picked.

Wow, google has the wired magazine on the CIA guy also covered up I couldn't find it and I think I still have the magazine around somewhere.

Anything can be picked, given enough understanding of the lock itself, and skill and enginuity of the picker. There are many locks that I am unable to pick. That does not mean that they can not be picked.
