Justrite Cabinet Lock - Help!

Hey All,

Looking for a guiding hand.

I was recently given a Justrite Flammable Cabinet. I took the lock apart as far as I could.

The key is broken off inside the lock. Attempts to extract have failed on my end.

I can manipulate the lock to locked/unlocked positions.

Any suggestions for 1) removing the broken key? I don't even know if a key extractor
can grab it 2) remove the cylinder/core?

I think popping the brass plunger out is the secret but I cant get it to pop.
Not sure what position the keyway needs to be in if that is the way to
remove it?

Pics below

Thanks

Lumpy

Hmm, if it isnt too far down you could try a bit of superglue on the end of a toothpick if you are careful.

Find a hobby shop that has X-Acto Coping Saw Blades 734. Cut them in half and screw one down the side of the keyway make sure the cylinder is turned either locked or unlocked position and pull it out. Don't over screw it in there or you won't be able to pull it out it will be wedged too tight.

Used them for years works on most broken keys. Sometimes requires 2 of them one on each side and then twist the 2 together slightly with small vise grips and pull slowly.

Re: Justrite Cabinet Lock - Help!

Great idea, Richard!

I frequently use the 'E' string from a guitar. Bend a tiny hook on the end with needle nosed pliers. I push it in at the top of the key, hook side down. This has the added advantage with pin tumbler locks of lifting that first pin that may be trapping the broken key. Push it in far enough that the hook catches on the key's bitting, then slowly pull outwards.

On keyways with enough space and on some wafer locks, sometimes I slide the guitar wire hook along the side of the key blade.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Gordon

Thanks! I'll give that a try to get the broken key out.

Any thoughts on removing the core?

Re: Justrite Cabinet Lock - Help!

side drill it at a angle at the back...come up from behind with a wire force the key out, would save it from the scrap bucket...as the last resort method.
The master key will release the core by pushing on a wafer or pin in the back of the lock ... only in the open/ unlocked position will it pull out, thats the norm.

Re: Justrite Cabinet Lock - Help!

I managed to drill a very small hole into the back end of the broken
key. Then used a dental pick to pull it out.

Never did get the core out but I was able to cut (4) new keys from
the broken piece.

Got everything back together and loaded the cabinet up with all
my ammo. ;-)
