Sentry Safe

Hey guys. My cousin's girlfriend has a family safe whose owner died, and nobody knows the combination. I've never really done any safe manipulation, but this safe has a tubular lock on it between the handle and the dial. What I'm wondering is, will opening that open the door, or is that just for changing the combination?

Not sure what model it is, but I'd say it has roughly a cubic foot internal volume. Combination dial on the door, and a handle that turns down to open. Tubular pin tumbler between the dial and the handle.

We're trying to get it open without destroying it. Or at the very least, without damaging the contents (which are unknown).

Re: Sentry Safe

Awesome. Thanks!

I sort of had a feeling that being able to change the combination would be a little too fancy for Sentry.

Re: Sentry Safe

Depending on the model it could be either a bypass or a secondary lock. On a sentry safe I had, the tubular lock was a secondary lock so you could leave the combination lock open and use the key to lock it, or use one or the other.

You could also change the combo by pushing a button on the back and turning the dial to a number. That would reset the combo to a specific one set out in the user manual.

Re: Sentry Safe

The tubular lock is very likely an additional lock.
Unlocking it will not unlock the safe.
It must be dialed too.

The only sentry I have has a cruciform lock that actuates the fence. There is no handle on the safe. Is this one similar? What would be the point of having a handle?

Re: Sentry Safe

No, not the same at all.
If the key retracts the bolt work, then a handle is not needed.
If the safe has a handle, then it is IT that retracts the bolt work.
Any other device serves the purpose of locking.

Re: Sentry Safe

Safe has 2 locks. Safe in pics is missing lock plunger, relocker, and wheels.

Finger is pointing to hole where lock plunger should be. Below hole is where black plastic, spring loaded relocker should be.

Re: Sentry Safe

yeah, if the tubular lock plunger is depressed (almost flush with the door) then you need both combo and key. If it is sticking out about an inch, then don't push it in, all you need is the combo.

It looks very similar to this, but not the exact same model (maybe the same model, but a different year). All I have right now is a crappy cell phone pic. If the tubular lock sticks out when unlocked, it appears to be locked currently. The handle/lock/dial configuration looks the same though.

I haven't actually seen it in person yet - waiting for everyone's schedules to align.

I had my hopes up that the lock was a bypass, but you guys are starting to make me think I may not be able to open it, lol.

Re: Sentry Safe

So with that layout, both locks must be unlocked, correct? I'm not really familiar enough with safes to tell what is going on just by looking at the picture... But the "Dual locking system for added security" on the sticker has me thinking that picking the tubular lock will not accomplish anything without also entering the correct combination.

Correct. And if thinking pulling the keylock will help then relocker fires. But....there is a way to handle that.
