Wrong key stuck in tubular lock

One of my co-workers just came to me with this lock.

The story is one of the guys tried his key in a different guy's laptop lock. To their surprise, it opened the lock with no resistance.

To their dismay, the key is now trapped in the lock and will not turn back.

I thought maybe it was key retaining until you put the lock back on the cable, but no dice there.

Any advice?

Re: Wrong key stuck in tubular lock

It might be possible to force the key back to the normal position and get it out. However, if the key has somehow been turned one point, you won't be able to do that. Your only hope is that you can wiggle the key a whole lot.

Another option might be to tap the key hard on the end with a hammer as you try to turn it towards the key removal position. If you are lucky, it might bump the pins and turn.

Odds are, though, you need a new lock! * info from another source, I copied and pasted . Hope it helps.

Never mind, crisis averted. I assumed the keys were close, but bumping and jiggling were not working. 10 minutes after making this post I finally hit on the right mix of jiggling and brute force and the key turned back.

Good stuff. Someone years from now will find this solution on google after much frustration.

Re: Wrong key stuck in tubular lock

Awesome job. I was thinking that you might have also been able to shim the pins down past the tip of the key almost like comb picking them to release the pins from the cuts in the key.

I don't know that I've ever seen one that's yellow like that - all of the ones I've seen are orange. I've long wondered about master keys for these...they're available mastered.

Re: Wrong key stuck in tubular lock

Try rap it or bump - as its under spring tension may just move the pins enough to turn to remove key :hammering:

I see you have done just this - must read the listing in full lol

Your prediction was correct. I had the same problem. Googled and found this post. The hammer method worked. Thanks!
