First time picker...can I get an opinion on this lock?

Hi all..its nice to have joined your site! I hope to learn a lot here!

Being a newbie, I read around about the lock type that Im having problems with.
I lost my key for my electric bicycle lock and searched high and low for my spare and
have no clue where it is in the house.
The key has the same matching pattern on both edges. The lock hole also has a flap which
covers the key hole. The lock is for my electric bicycle battery. The lock both turns on the
power AND releases the battery from the frame. There are no screws or bolts around the
lock or battery to get access to it.
Is this type of key called a Double sided wafer key?
I searched online for a pic of the same key that fits the bikes. Here it is:

I plan on ordering some picks from http://www.lockpicktools.com/specialty-items/
Will I need the Double Lock Pick Set?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Nope. Just use a tension wrench and a half diamond. Flip the pick over to pick the other side. Repeat until open. Recommend raking these wafer locks to open them quickly.

Those are for raking or jiggling double sided wafer car locks. They may not look it, but they will be far too big for your lock.

If you really want to buy a set - get them and let us know how you go.

They will probably open A lock someday and at least you will have direct experience of them. I'm sure we all have bought some fairly useless tools that are laying in the bottom of a tool box. I know I have.

If you don't already have a basic set of picks I would get a set in preference to these and do what Gordon said. Rake it with a half diamond. :halfdiamond: Plus, you will then have a set of useful tools --- once you learn to use them.

These are more a gimmick than useful tools but if you want to purchase a set ----- well, it's your money and who knows one of them might work. :D

Let us know how you get on with them.

What Neilau said.

I can't in all conscience recommend any of those sets, because I haven't used them. One I've seen which might be suitable for the lock you want to open is this one:

http://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/products_p/wafer.htm

Again, haven't used 'em, completely up to you if you buy them.

Isn't dx pick sets are from Korea? at least most of them. I think i saw thread on this site, and it's about sometimes how dx picks doesn't come, even doesn't dispatch(ship) from Korea. Yeah, something like that. You need to contact, if it's taking longer than expected date. I also saw few Korean sets. I thought there is distributer, dealers in Korea.

Re: First time picker...can I get an opinion on this lock?

Those are for a rather specific type of double sided wafer lock. They are for use on the "High Security Double Sided Wafer" locks that are used on display cases, sometimes on T-Handles and such things. Locks like the DUO, DUO2 and their ilk.

Re: First time picker...can I get an opinion on this lock?

Well, looking at that key, I can see that the biting is symmetrical. THat belies the fact that it is actually a single sided wafer lock and the key is cut like that so that it will work when inserted "right side up" or "upside down." I would definitely go with GW's suggestion of using a half diamond or perhaps a half ball pick if you are so inclined (I have no idea what angle you are at rest at, so I will leave out any such speculation as it will only confuse matters with unnecessary details that will not help you in the long run, hell, not even in the short run!)

Should be a pretty simple lock to open. Single sided wafer locks are a good starting point for many folks as well due to their ease which helps to build an early self-confidence that you can, in fact, pick locks.

How about pics of your lock?

Is anyone else getting a red flag here or just me?
