Its a billhook, not sure intended use. Limbing is common for this size. I have used them for splitting bamboo as well. Bill hook family is huge. This is a right hand chisel grind. The handle is flatted to index with the grind. Much like a Japanese style knife. The only markings I could find are a large S and C.T. Sheltons Co sheffield. No real info I have dug up on it. I just planned to use it for yard work or trade.
The plan is to reprofile just the cutting edge. Oil the wood and tighten the collar. I love old patinas the most ill do is oil it. Leaving things like the spine un touched showing the use marks is what I think gives these old things so much character in the first place.
I dont know why I find it fun to refinish to working stuff like this and cast iron skillets and axes. But I have had much worse hobbies.
Edit CT Skelton Co sheffield is the maker. Kinda neat
