I use the Ascent as my edc and the Rat1 as more of as an abuser/heavy duty knife. The Klein is mostly for scraping and doing minor tasks on my desk. I'm not really into knife collecting, I used to carry the Rat1 as an edc but it was always a bit bulky imo, and the blade is really meant for some major cutting. The Ascent on the other hand is a nice light knife, perfect for daily tasks.

The Kershaw I have uses a mechanism similar to your top one.
I like the one-handed ease it offers for unlocking the blade.

Benchmade? I think I've seen some of those before.
Are some of 'em REALLY pricey? Or am I thinking of
a different brand? The ones I seen were $100-$800.

Beautiful knives, I am a fan of benchmade, the only thing I don't like is the thumb studs I much prefer a hole as the studs get caught up in my pocket and tend to open on removal.

I have the agree, a thumb hole would have been ideal, but the price was really good on the knife. The Rat1's thumb stud on the other hand is very smooth and does not tend to get stuck as easily as most. Luckily the Benchmade sits perfectly with the thumbstud just on the outside of my pocket. I'm really loving this knife, even if I just got it :p

They can be pricey from what i've seen on the evilbay depending on the materials used. The one I bought is an older model(not even on their website) and was a steal on ebay for the quality of the knife.

Gerber 06 auto with tanto combo blade in s30v with aluminum handles. From the logo it seems like an older one.

I wonder if that comes in a drop point

Nice knives. How would you rate the edge retention, and sharpening ease of the ATS34? I've heard it's pretty much on par with their 154CM, but I've never had a chance to try it.

ATS34 is the same steel but made in Japan. I have a neck knife in 154CM and it takes a very keen edge and holds it well.

ATS and 154 are pretty much identical, although 154 had a problem with consistency at one point. When Bob Loveless started using 154 he had to buy it in large industrial batches from Crucible as knifemaker supply houses didn't stock it, hence the variation from batch to batch. This led to him going offshore to get a similar steel manufactured in Japan. Today both are available in good quality small orders, but some prefer 154 because it supports an American manufacturer. I say "I" by technically it's my girlfriend's - she's a massive Hannibal fan so I bought this for her one year as a birthday gift, it's a Spyderco Harpy, the same one he (Hannibal) uses in the book (the serrated version - the straight edge version gets used in the film, but you can't get those for love nor money any more).

That Gerber looks like a brute of a blade. I also like the Tanto point for EDC it seems to be more efficient IMHO although my present EDC is a Gerber paraframe with partial serrations it's the smallest one I own which is why it's my EDC. It does have double thumb studs which tend to snag when I have my nailpouch on making it hard to get out of my pocket.


Nice blades P especially the Benchmade it looks very comfortable and the quality shows. I like the Klein also just because I'm a Klein tools whore from my Electrician days.
